NILES — The last day of classes at Niles High School ended with a fight about 1 p.m. Thursday.

Four students were arrested in connection with the incident, which began as an altercation between two students, police said.

One of the teens had a single-edged razor blade that he allegedly used to inflict a 1-inch cut on another teen’s head, police said. The injured teen did not need medical treatment.

The teen with the razor blade faces an assault with a deadly weapon charge while the others were arrested on assault and battery and disturbing the peace charges, police said. All were between 15 and 16 and were released to their parents pending disposition from juvenile court.

Niles Superintendent Doug Law said the altercation began by the doors to the main parking lot during the second half of lunch. Security personnel broke up the fight.

Law said that once the police investigation is complete, the school will follow its disciplinary procedures regarding the incident. Any school discipline the students may face will carry over into next year.

I don't know why people are acting like this isn't a big deal.My boyfriend was the one that GOT CUT.If something serious would have happened to him I don't know what I would do.He should not have got aressted. He was one of the ones trying to break them up and look what happened.I'm a freshmen at Niles and people are acting like we're the only school that has fights.

ironic how the ONLY administrator there to help break it up was the one they're firing next year. only in our lovely schools system. welcome to benton niles harbor

Personally I dont know how many times i've seen schools from IN on the news because of violence, so you people cant say anything about Niles. the only time we've really been on the news is for good things. I was standing right there. Ther were minimal staff trying to break p the incident. The majority was us students. Thats why there were so many of us involved. One of the teens that were arrested was trying to split up the fight when another came and started hitting him. now you al are informed

I was there, and that fight was not controlled, it started about 6more fights. security got hit to the floor a few times, and so did the vice prinicple and teachers. students who tried to stop it got hit and pushed away. they tried to put us in lock down [paniced] but noting could stop it, until the cops came in and pulled out tazors. seriously this isnt the real thing. and two of the guys who were arrested shouldnt have been. they tried to stop the fight, and to get blamed for it is bull.

to finish what I was saying before, the two who began the fight really need to learn their lesson, the other two really just tried to stop the fight. there were a lot more people involved trying to stop it, kids wise, but that i guess wasn't good enough to make the headline.

I know all of the guys who were involved in the fight. All of them are so immature. You can't say that kids will be kids because really not bringing a rezor blade to school is common sense. I was actually friends with these kids and you can only blame two kids, not all four because the other two tried to pull apart and stop the fight. The security didn't stop the fight right away, the tried but it didn't happen. They both ended up getting hit or on the floor. And Indiana isn't that much better!!

Bring back prayer to the schools, and huge paddles for idiots like these clowns. The fool with the razor needs to spend his whole summer picking up trash along roads in Niles.

Anon 8:22 what do u mean thank god u live in Indiana do u pay attention to the news. You act like Indiana is perfect, what about all the students that have taken guns to school this year. I've heard more about that problem in Indiana than I have ever heard of in Benton Harbor schools. And yes, some of those kids that brought guns to school were released to their parents also.

10:04 am Anon, Lakeshore and St. Joseph are not perfect. I went to high school in St. Joseph and they are no better. Their parents just teach them to be snobby and to think they are better than anyone who has less money than they do. If u do not go to school there all of your school years, they treat u like trash no matter how nice u are to them.

4:53 PM Anonymous, why the Michigan State Police? Do you realize that there are nights, there are no Michigan State Police patroling the Greater Niles Area. There is a manpower shortge at the Niles State Police Post. This information was printed about 10 days ago on the Niles Daily Star website.

If this happened at my school, you can bet a few male teachers would have put a few lumps on these idiots heads. Too bad other kids didn't step in to prevent this from happening in the first place.

Friday, May 30 at 10:47 AM well guess what!!! wrote ...

well these kids are just making it worst for themselves, i guess they are looking forward to metal detectors and dress codes!! lol kids these days have no manners or control, they do what they want! parents need their rights back, so teachers and administration can do there real job, and quit getting babysitters pay,i have a son that goes there, and he said even security had hard time controlling that fight! if parents dont take charge now its just gonna get worst.

it's a shame a school day has to end like this, why was a weapon there? I am sure glad that Lakeshore and St. Joe are able to keep their students on a leash. That stops things like this from happening.

To Anon @ 8:22 am-- I, too am surprised that the comments posted here reflect "kids will be kids". First, why would a teenager have a razor blade on him on school property? Second, last time I knew a razor blade is considered a dangerous weapon when used to hurt other people. How many people can get on an airline these days with a razor blade in their pocket? Whether the child needed medical attention or not, the children should have severe consequences for their actions.

I am totally amazed at the 'kids will be kids' attitude, and the blame on others. These 'kids' had weapons and were not just 'tussling' in the school yard, this was a violent act with a razor blade? Thank God I live in Indiana. The child with the 'blade' wouldn't have been released to his parents here....

This is what happens when you don't have 1/2 days during final exams. Teachers are expected to babysit these students when they should actually be home.
