Two Buchanan men were arrested early Wednesday in connection with copper wire thefts in Indiana and Michigan, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reported.

A Michigan State Police trooper spotted their vehicle speeding on Weaver Road, southwest of Niles in Bertrand Township, about 7:45 a.m. Their vehicle nearly hit one of the deputies conducting traffic detail at Weaver Road and U.S. 12 who attempted to stop them, police said.

Police pursued the car, which eventually stopped. The men then ran into a wooded area where they were caught.

In their vehicle police found about $2,000 worth of copper stolen from a construction site in the South Bend area, police said. The men reportedly told to detectives they were responsible for thefts in Indiana and Buchanan, police said.
