ELKHART — KIK Custom Products in Elkhart announced a $24 million expansion project that will bring 190 jobs. The jobs will require special training and will pay $14 an hour.

Gov. Mitch Daniels toured the plant Thursday. He says expansion projects like this one are helping the sluggish economy.

Like many of us, shopper Pat Richard didn't know that many of the products in her shopping cart were made locally.

Name brand aerosol products, like Gold Bond foot spray, came off KIK Custom Product's production line.

The company is expanding its Elkhart plant and adding 190 new jobs by 2009.

"It was about time to see progress like that. You hardly see it anything like that. You just see the doom, doom, doom that's happening," said Richard.

Thousands of manufacturing jobs have been lost in Northern Indiana since January.

"As we welcome 200 here, we could be losing more jobs; so tomorrow we have to go get two for every one we lose," said Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels.

A spokesperson for his challenger Jill Long-Thompson says nearly 20,000 jobs have been lost in the last two months, something that needs to change.

Indiana started a campaign earlier this year urging Michigan businesses to "Come on in."

"We live in a world of not only national but global competition. Investment like this, jobs like this, could go anywhere," said Daniels.

A spokesperson for Long-Thompson says she'd bring jobs to the state by overhauling the tax system and creating job training programs for students.

Fortunately for Elkhart, 190 jobs are coming, as well as $24 million in investment.

"I am happy about it," said Richard.

And her future shopping lists will take local products into consideration.

KIK says it chose Elkhart because of a property tax abatement and state grants. In return, KIK will give the city 15 percent of its savings to use for economic growth.

The company plans to start hiring people for specialized jobs paying nearly $14 an hour in July.

Actually T Gaskill you are completely wrong. The average wage in this county is below 14.00 per hour. Of course there will be more jobs and millions coming to Elkhart. It called drug houses..your idiot of a mayor destroyed the effectiveness of the ICE unit. Nice job street department Mayor!

state grants , so I wonder how much we paid for these jobs and you people think $14 is good pay probably don't know what an abatement is.

To 11:39 AM Sick of the complaining. I've said it before and I'll say it again. An education does not guarantee intelligence.(hint)

I think it's time for everybody to get their mind out of the gutter. $14.00 an hour is a decent wage for jobs which DO NOT REQUIRE a college education. I am a college graduate and make $22.00 an hour. You cannot be greedy these days, take what you can get. While you complain and are unemployed, somebody else is making something of themself and making $14.00 an hour. On another note, unemployment pays 66% of your wage not including overtime. You'd need to make 21 an hour to match.

Forest River Cardinal plants just layed off 50% of their people today (Friday 30th) Then will be off work for a one-two weeks, and then only put out 4 a day three days a week... I'm thinking unemployment would pay more myself... things are not improving but getting worse. -Just Me...

If you can't get by on 14.00 an hour, your life style is too high - cut out some of the junk - cell phones, dish tv, etc.

I agree Gaskill. $14.00 is not bad but how does a family lets say husband, wife and 1 child survive on that. The price of gas and groceries alone would take the majority of that money and lets not forget we have to pay the government to screw us so you are right. It is really mediocre pay in the big picture.

Be thankful they are expanding here instead of elsewhere. They could have outsourced it overseas for a lot less money! Personally, I'm tired of all the complaining everyone does. If you don't like the viewpoint, then change your standpoint. If you don't want the $14/hour, then go back to school and get some more education and make something of yourself. Don't tell me it can't be done because there are thousands that have come to this country with nothing and made something of themselves. Get off

Try reading my whole post next time. I didn't say it was a bad wage but it definitely is not the high wage that the governor and the company are representing it as.

To Gaskill... Try making it on $8 an hr..while $14 is not a great wage..it is a decent enough wage for someone without college to start off with...and it is an amount that a person could get by on...you have to figure in benefits and the tax break at the end of the year..if your single your doing pretty good and if your a family you get a substatial refund..one that allows you to take care of your major needs..look at the picture as a whole.

$14 an hour is not a high paying job and everyone in this area knows it except WSBT and the governor it looks like. I don't understand why it's always the the high paid professionals that think is so much money for the average worker. I think they need figure out what the actual cost of living is these days for a small family that has a mortgage, car payment and all the other costs. Don't take it the wrong way though, it's not bad pay but $14 is in no way a high a high wage in this area.

Wow $14 an hour to risk your life; after all this is the old Accra-Pak that blows up every now and again. Besides the risk the hourly rate is the same as a lot of people were making in the mid 90's. With todays inflation that means you'll have the buying power of 1983; what a deal.
