ELKHART — A new post office could be coming to Elkhart. Some think the current one is too small to handle a growing population and there's not enough parking. There’s one site in particular the city thinks would be a good fit.

On any given day the post office can be a very busy place. Parking, whether along side streets, or in the main lot, becomes an issue. Sometimes patrons have to drive around the block to find a place.

"It’s inconvenient to come down here, lots of times you can't get in, there's nowhere to park,” said Elkhart resident Gloria Sanders.

"There's just not enough space for a lot of people,” said Elkhart resident Darla O’Hara.

Mayor Dick Moore agrees.

"The parking there for the customers is very, very poor,” he told WSBT News. “Three times a day it ties up our main street as people can't get into parking places and are waiting to get into the post office."

The mayor says the look of the building is another issue.

"I felt that perhaps the [U.S.] Postal Service might consider building Elkhart a nice federal building in our downtown area,” Moore said.

An area that he feels would be a good fit for a new postal facility is the site of the old Elkhart Foundry that sits on an eight-acre tract of land and is located less than a mile from the current Elkhart post office.

"We're suggesting that to the post office to maybe relocate there,” Moore said.

But he says the current post office is in a leased building and that lease doesn’t run out until 2010.

"I'd rather have the post office move someplace else,” said Elkhart resident Angela Young. “With a bunch of parking spots and everything for everyone, don't have to fight the traffic to get in and out."

Mayor Moore says he'll be working with Congressman Joe Donnelly's office to convince postal authorities to eventually build a new facility.

Clearly Elkhart needs a new post office, and why not make it in the downtown in an old vacant building. Elkhart needs to fill the downtown so it can become a prosporous place rather a bunch of old run-down buildings.

The Post Office at the foundry. Nice urban planning mayor

How about a satelite post office on the north end? There are plenty of vacant store fronts that could accomodate such. How much more convenient for the public. Also, it's not like the post office loses $. What with all the online shopping seems they should be quite profitable by now.

Re: new P.O.--if I'm not mistaken, the area that the mayor is proposing for a new P.O. site is in back of Central H S. Isn't that area congested enough already. I could be wrong, but I'm just saying.........
