Police ID teens critically injured in Fulton County crash

A serious crash Saturday afternoon in Fulton County sent 10 people to the hospital, including five teenagers riding in the same car, the Indiana State Police said.

The accident happened about 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of S.R. 19 and East Division Road, north of Akron, when a car driven westbound by 17-year-old Seth Mathias, of Rochester, collided with an SUV headed north on S.R. 19, driven by 33-year-old Timothy Richey of Huntington.

All five occupants of the 1996 Chrysler Sebring driven by Mathias were flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, where hospital staff said four of them remained in critical condition early Sunday. The five include:

  • Mathias, in critical condition with a severe head injury.
  • Courtney Engle, 16, of Akron, in fair condition.
  • Jessica Imel, 15, of Rochester, in critical condition with a severe head injury.
  • Trevor Williams, 17, of Akron, in critical condition with a head injury.
  • Brandon Keller, 18, of Rochester, in critical condition with a head injury.

The five people traveling in Richey's 2001 Dodge Durango were taken to Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, where two of them were treated. They include:

  • Richey, who was treated and released for a knee injury.
  • Samantha Richey, 13, whose left wrist was broken.

Investigators said the accident happened when Mathias failed to yield right-of-way to Richey at the intersection.

bjk100, were you not a teenager at any time? It is good for you to limit a kid from more than 1 in a car, but it is just like all other things in life, kids do not listen to their parents ALL the time, and things happen. But things happen for a reason, and I believe they happen to make you realize that you are only given this life for a length of time, and use your time you have on earth wisely, trust in God.

Some of you people are idiots. It may be true that you just want to educate people on how to prevent these types of accidents from happening, but this is not the time. I am a friend of a friend of one of the families involved. One of these kids may not make it. How would you feel if it were your child, your brother, your sister, your nephew, etc.? Why is it that people who have not experienced painful things like this think they have the right to judge and say hurtful things? Just shut-up.

I look at it this way. That we are all human, and we all make mistakes. We are all also forgiven for things that we do. If you the people that have comments that you should keep to yourself, have not seen what I have seen daily since the accident on Saturday. These kids are fighting for their lives and need all the community and the surrounding community to pray. That is what these kids need. I love my son Seth and I want to see him and the other kids recover from this tragedy.Pray with me.

To Linda who wrote, 'Kids will be kids'. What an ignorant excuse! Sure kids can have fun, but there is 'responsibility' that goes in hand. When you endanger other people with your actions, that is a problem. I don't know what caused this particular accident and my prayers are with all those involved.

I agree with the person who wrote that this blog should not even exist. This is the first time that I have written a comment and I am writing now only to say that no one, especially the injured parties and their families, need to be subjected to the (sometimes) insensitive and idiotic statements that are written here. What is the purpose of this blog, anyway?????

To BJK100: Get real! Kids are kids. I used to pack my car with kids when I was a kid and yes, we talked and laughed and listened to loud music and acted silly. Isn't that the joy of being a kid? Accidents like any other life changing event happen in the snap of a finger. May god wrap his loving arms around each child and bring them back home to their parents, friends and families.

Drivers license do not state that you can't have passengers if you are under 18. All of that doesn't matter right now. What matters is that people were hurt and we should all take a moment and pray for these families. Don't try to figure who did what and all that junk. Just pray and hope for the best. Accidents are accidents and there's no need to dwell on what if's and who did it. I pray that these children make it through as some of them go to school with my kids. God bless each family!

Anon --I still say now is not the time to make an example of all this. The parents are hurting enough. In time, let's pray that God makes it possible for the teens themselves to give the lessons about careful driving to their peers. In the mean time, please focus on doing anything and everything possible to help the family members put one foot in front of the other. Send cards. Pray. Take a gasoline card to the hospital maybe. But most of all, please don't find fault right now.

I don't think this blog should even exist. It's hard enough for the victims and family to deal with the struggles from this accident. If you aren't involved, there is no reason to speculate or judge about who is at fault and who needs to take responsibility. Imagine if this were your child and you had to read about arguments after all you had been through. People make mistakes...and now is the time for us to focus on prayer and hope that these families have the strength to get through this

all we keep hearing about is those poor kids! what about the family in the other vehicle. the teenage girl suffered multiple injuries. there was also a very small boy in the vehicle. those teens are old enough to know what they are doing, they had a choice in their actions, that small child wasn't given a choice and was too young to make one. that family was victemized by the driversinexperience.

to me some blame falls on the state, i have complained about that intersection on a few diffrent occasions because u have to about have your front end in the north bound lane to see down to the south and all the state has ever done is come out and weed eat the area, the trees need removed and the hill cut back like they did on the north side, this isnt the first bad accident there, how many are going to have to happen there before the state does something? Just hope for the best for the families

My prayers go out to everyone involved and especially for a complete recovery for all those injured. I have a daughter who will be driving soon...all of us parents fear for their children everytime they get into a car with an inexperienced driver or get behind the wheel themselves. But, accidents happen, and mistakes happen--even by experienced drivers. How many of us have driven from point A to point B and not remembered the trip because we were lost in thought about something?

It wasn't long ago that my children were in an accident and I remember how hurtful some of the comments others' made were to our family. Please---drop them a card, give them a hug, mow their gas while their gone, send a meal or do anything but lecture them on how their teens could have avoided this tragedy. They don't need that right now.

The fact of the matter is the kids had a stop sign which is quite a ways off the st. rd. They were supposed to yield to the st rd traffic.According to 2 witnesses they pulled out in front of the vehicle with the right of way. They were obviously at fault. St. rd. 19 is a thru rd without a stop sign at that intersection. The other driver had the right of way...... I pray for the kids and their families.

In a time like this, no one needs to be lectured. An accident can happen with just 1 in a car. I'm from the area of the wreck. It's a bad intersection. The kids DID stop. A passenger said it was clear & went. It's hard to see because of the weeds. As a teen (yrs ago), I always rode with a bunch in a car...no accidents ever. Things happen no matter how careful you are. Don't blame/lecture in a bad time as this. I'm sure these kids will learn a great lesson in life, praying they survive.

This is why letting young drivers take car loads of kids is a bad idea. they get distracted to easily and with 5 in the car i am certain there was a lot of talking going on and not paying attention to the road. I alwasy limited my kids to 1 or at most 2 passengers in a vehicle with them at a time.
