Elkhart County authorities are investigating the theft of at least $60,000 in copper wire from a Verizon facility in the 24300 block of C.R. 45 over the weekend.

Employees of the telecommunications company told the sheriff's office that the wire and some copper-coated steel rods were taken sometime between 7 p.m. Friday night and 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to police spokesman Trevor Wendzonka.

The suspect or suspects were able to get through a fence onto the property, located between Elkhart and Goshen near Ox Bow Park, Wendzonka said.

Two spools of copper wire, each holding a quarter-mile of wire length, were taken, along with the rods.

Wendzonka said police continue their investigation.
