AKRON -- One of the five Fulton County teens injured Saturday in a traffic accident near Akron has died at a Fort Wayne hospital, authorities said.

A Fulton County dispatcher said Brandon Keller, 18, of Rochester, died late Monday at Parkview Hospital. Staff there confirmed that Keller was no longer listed as a patient.

Keller was one of 10 people sent to area hospitals after the crash, including the teens who were riding in the same car, Indiana State Police said.

The accident happened about 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 19 and East Division Road, north of Akron, when a westbound car driven by 17-year-old Seth Mathias, of Rochester, collided with an SUV headed north on State Road 19, driven by 33-year-old Timothy Richey of Huntington, Ind., police said.

All five occupants of the 1996 Chrysler Sebring driven by Mathias were flown to Parkview, where hospital officials said Mathias and Jessica Imel, 15, of Rochester, remained in critical condition early Tuesday.

Upgraded to serious condition was Trevor Williams, 17, of Akron, with a head injury. Courtney Engle, 16, of Akron, remained in fair condition, hospital staff said.

Five people traveling in Richey's 2001 Dodge Durango were taken to Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, where two of them were treated. They are Richey, who was treated and released for a knee injury, and Samantha Richey, 13, whose left wrist was broken.

Investigators said the accident happened when Mathias failed to yield the right of way to Richey at the intersection.

I don't believe the age had ANYTHING to do with it. I so agree with "someone" who advocates for the driving age to be raised to 18. The roads today are more crowded and dangerous than ever, and I witness young teen drivers making "stupid" moves such as "burnouts" and excessively speeding when I am in the parking lot of a local high school EVERY day. It amazes me that simply NONE of the teens use a turn signal. People have forgotten that driving is a not a right, but is a privelege and there are very good reasons for the driving rules of the road.

Again, there is a solution this problem. The highway itself presents a host of hazzards for the most seasoned driver, but to those with far less experience it proves to be just what it is; an avenue of tragedy. Since it would be all but impossible to restrict where younger drivers go, the driving age should be raised to 18 for adolecents that are STILL in school and maintain a "C" average. This would provide advantages of lower insurance rates to less fuel comsumption and fewer lives lost.
