The Hummer brand is under review and could be sold or revamped, according to Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors Corp.

Wagoner, in comments before the opening Tuesday morning of the GM shareholders meeting in Wilmington, Del., revealed possible changes for Hummer.

Wagoner also announced that four GM truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico will be closed because of surging fuel prices.

The Hummer H2, the brand’s largest SUV, is produced in Mishawaka by AM General Corp.

Wagoner’s comments raise questions about the long-term outlook for the Mishawaka plant, where about 400 workers returned to their jobs Monday after a three-month layoff resulting from a parts supplier strike.

“That’s the nature of the beast,” said H2 employee Dennis Cox. “We'll continue to build quality trucks here with GM; if not GM, we’ll build them for somebody else."

"With the economy the way it is, things are going to happen,” said employee Richard Rittenhouse, Jr. “In the past, AM General has always had jobs. Whether we sell out the Hummer name or not we’ll have something here.”

Joanne Krell, a spokeswoman for GM in Detroit, said the "strategic review" for Hummer reflects changes in the auto market where consumers are turning to smaller, fuel-efficient cars instead of trucks and SUVs.

Comments about the results of that review at this point would only be speculation, she said.

"We know this brand has great potential," Krell said. "It’s an excellent brand, an iconic brand."

The strike by the United Auto Workers against American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. also forced GM to shut down several truck and SUV plants this spring.

The H2 is based on a GM chassis but was inspired by the Humvee, a military vehicle produced by AM General in an adjacent plant.

Under a deal with GM, AM General builds the H2 but GM owns the Hummer brand. H2 production started nearly six years ago in the summer of 2002.

A civilian version of the military Humvee, called the Hummer H1, was sold by GM for several years but has since been phased out.

The H2 is powered by a large V-8 engine. Because of the vehicle’s size, the H2 doesn’t have an EPA fuel economy estimate.

The mid-size Hummer H3 is produced in a GM truck plant in Shreveport, La. The H3 has smaller V-8 and five-cylinder engines.

Krell said there are no plans to change the H2 and H3 powertrains in an effort to improve fuel economy. She noted that the H2 engine is capable of running on E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.

Plans for the H3T, a pickup truck version of the H3, still are on schedule, she said.

She said there are no announced plans for the Hummer HX, a concept displayed at auto shows that would be smaller than the H3.

Owned an H3 with the 5cyl motor. Way underpowered and in the shop 3 times before I finally got rid of it. Nice looking vehicle though. Maybe the new smaller HX model will be sorted out.

I have an Hummer H1, it is one of the best vehicles I have owned, used it hunting in Montana etc. The AM General plants are great places, took a tour of the facility. Good old American manufacturing. Let's keep these "beasts" rolling, and keep our people employed.

I'd buy a diesel hummer if I could afford one, then just convert it to vegetable oil. People need to look into that kind of stuff, then they will be to able to afford to keep running these bigger vehicles.

I feel for the people that may eventually loose thier jobs again if they shut down. However these veicles serve no purpose and why build gas guzzlers during this time where fuel is outrageous. Sure it provides jobs, but its a counter-productive one. It would be like 1 person making dinner for 10 just for himself and throwing away the leftovers. Its just wasteful.

The civilian Hummers are not only gas guzzlers but they need a lot of upkeep and maintainance. They are great offroad but there are several other similiar offroad vehicles out there that stay together, get better mpg and are much less expensive. Sorry GM, your gamble did'nt payoff.

Its funny that BUSH made that comment. I am not a Democrat, just an AMERICAN who feels strongly about the safety of other AMERICANS that are fighting so you and I can comment on these articles. I'm guessing you don't care about these soldiers, your fellow Americans, considering you chose to liken yourself with the one responsible for making up the lie that sent the troops to Iraq in the first place.

Some of you people are so jealous of the people that work and make GOOD money! You should be behind the hummer plant and not want anymore unemployment--but instead you actually have the guts to say the things you do. Be Behind your county and your city! Too much unemployment in the USA! Oh thats right--lets sell to china and see if the prices of vehicles go down! I bet NOT! Think about that!

Wake up!! it's not just the fuel prices causing this. People that can afford Hummers usually don't worry about having the money to fill the tank.

One should look at the time when the H2 came out on the market. The H2 came out at the top of the down slope of SUV sales. This brand WAS a good selling LUXURY SUV that will always remain an icon in the marketplace. The response to gas prices are not a major factor when it comes to the purchase of the H2. The belief that a soon coming MPG restriction on vehicles produced is the major factor in GMs decision. Might one add that Arnold Schwartzenegger no longer endorses the H2 because of political.

AM General should be sold(the hummer brand) to Tata, the company that just bought Jaguar from Ford. The Hummer brand is still good, and if a new military vehicle can be developed(to replace the M998) by AM General, the military will look at it. AM General, and GM have options, and a almost new plant may get a new lease on life. Magna, a giant Canadian conglomerate, could also use the hummer brand to start producing cars. They have the resources.

I will correct you on your comment "Nothing but trash that works there!" My brother works there and he is not trash but a hard worker that takes pride in his home and community!! Your definition of trash would be? Maybe you need to climb down from your high horse and come down to the common persons level and put a hard days work in yourself! I bet when they close the plant you will be the first one whining about having to support some of them with Government assistance, make up your mind.

Here is an idea. Instead of making these unnecessary gas guzzling superficial over-compensating vehicles, invest in making the ones that our troops are driving around in Iraq better and safer. Do that so at least some peoples jobs can be saved as well as the lives of our troops. I mean they are out there fighting so some idiot can drive around in these stupid blasting 50 Cent with 8 lcd screens playing getting 6 miles to the gallon.
