Bzzt. Bzzt. Bzzt.

It’s just before 2 a.m. Wednesday and the new clock radio in the Van Pelt family kitchen in Granger is buzzing.

Someone should shut that thing off. Someone like the governor of Indiana.

Gov. Mitch Daniels was spending the night with the Van Pelt family of Granger when the alarm clock went off, he told a group of people over breakfast Wednesday at Honkers Family Restaurant in Mishawaka.

Daniels realized he was the only person in the household to hear it, so he padded into the kitchen and silenced it. Call it an executive decision.

The first-term governor, who is hoping in November for a second term, often stays with families while on the road, rather than at a hotel, campaign spokesman Cam Savage said.

He picked the Van Pelts because their 18-year-old daughter, Koneshia Murphy, got signatures to put him on the ballot for a school project. In fact, she collected 117.

“He seemed more interested in the people than other politicians,” Murphy said of Daniels.

The interrupted sleep didn’t seem to affect Daniels, who made his way around tables at Honkers, holding about two dozen invited guests.

He talked about his upcoming trade mission to Japan, and how he feels it’s important to maintain regular visits with business contacts there.

“We don’t just fly by, give them a kiss and come back in five years,” he said. “We go in every year.”

And he got a lot of praise from community leaders for his remarks to the state’s Republican convention earlier this week.

He also spent a lot of time sitting with student council members who serve on Mishawaka’s Youth Council.

“What’s on the worry list?” Daniels asked the students.

“Planning for homecoming,” one replied.

“Ah,” Daniels said. “A thankless job.”

After reading these comments, I am shocked how uninformed many people are. The toll road was originally built in the 50's with the understanding that it would be paid off in a reasonable length of time. However, politicians reverted to their usual spending habits over the years till the year Governor Daniel's leased it, we still owed nearly the entire amount it originally cost us. Leasing the toll road got us out from under that enormous debt and gave us excess money for road projects.

Real Hoosier - I'm sorry, but if a State is not to be run like a business, what should it be run like? Brad, when you make statements like that it hard for the others to call you a stupid (insert political party). I agree with you. Both Dems. and Reps. are to concerned with thier own agendas, calling eachother names, and basically everything else except serving the people and communities like they should. I always get called names when I say stuff like that. When faced with a truth they can't refute, they can only respond with personal insults, displaying very imature behavior.

How scary is this? While Mitch is enjoying sleepovers with strangers the rest of the state is in a downward spiral. Don't make the same mistake twice and vote this lunatic back into office. Yes he does what he says but you all better pay very close attention to exactly what his plans really are! He is the closest thing to a dictator as this state has ever seen!

Our state is a rust-belt state because we're still in the mindset that "manufacturing" is the way to go. We need to focus on high-tech jobs, not manufacturing plants. This is not Daniels fault. The fault lays on those in the ISGA. Our schools are bad: they wer bad under O'Bannion and Kernan. They haven't improved. Build better schools, companies will move here. That's an attraction to businesses.

Who is ramming his obnoxious political commercials down our throats while his opponent can afford nary a one? Who is probably going to buy and B.S. his way into four more years?

Indiana has the 31st worst economy in our country as rated by CNN, the jobless rate is rising, our money is out and Mitch wants to cut education, police and fire protection..Many of our societys neccessary aspects. You also state how you have no kind words for bush, however, did you know mitch worked for bush before becoming governor as his OMB?
