Thousands of Indiana Michigan Power customers were left in the dark from the gusty winds, rain and hail that quickly moved through the region throughout the day and evening Sunday.

Area dispatchers reported scattered trees and branches had fallen, and the Indiana Toll Road said high winds caused some problems for motorists.

Over 5,600 customers in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties in Indiana were without power Sunday evening. Customers in both counties had power restored by noon Monday, according to the utility's Web site.

In Berrien County, 1,392 customers were without power as of 11:15 p.m. Sunday but their power was also restored overnight. There were power outages in St. Joseph County, Mich. throughout the morning and afternoon Sunday, but I&M is reporting no more outages there as of Monday morning.

A lakeshore hazard message for LaPorte and Berrien counties warned residents of an increased risk of rip currents, including high waves associated with thunderstorms over southern Lake Michigan, in the Sunday afternoon and evening hours.
