SOUTH BEND — Severe storms ripped through northern Indiana Sunday afternoon leaving a trail of costly damage behind.

“I’ve got little bumps all over my car on the roof, the hood, the sides, everywhere!” exclaimed Mishawaka resident Judy Menzie. She watched helplessly from her apartment window as golf ball-sized hail pelted her one-year-old car. Her neighbor and a female friend also suffered damage to their vehicles.

“I’ve lived here my entire life and never seen anything like it before,” said Krista Dentino. “I’m sure the insurance claims will be flooding in tomorrow.”

In South Bend large trees blew over including one that ended up on the roof of a home in the 54000 block of 29th Street.

“Nobody’s home,” said neighbor Bill Thielke. “We’ll get out here with chain saws and have it all cleaned up. But when he (the homeowner gets home) he’s really going to be surprised.”

By late afternoon, 1,500 American Electric Power customers were without power in St. Joseph County. More than 1,700 were in the dark in Elkhart County.

A Lakeville woman narrowly escaped injury when a large tree toppled over, smashing her car just minutes after she got out. She said the vehicle is likely totaled.

There were no reports of any injuries from the storm.

I live at Indian Lakes Apts and was hit hard by the hail. I was kind of disappointed in WSBT because for a seemingly bad storm, they did not pause the regular broadcast until way after the storm came through. I know I would have appreciated more warning than a little box on the bottom of the screen, which by the way didn't say anything about potential hail. Must just be on the weekends that they don't seem to be worried about storms and informing the community about potential threats.

was driving on the bypass to take a car into mishiwaka to get looked at (dads car) and i couldnt see on the bypass it was that bad also on bashor rd out towards sr19 i saw some debris floating in the midst out towards sr 19 to the left. i thought it was a tornado.. but i think high winds just picked up some dirt and tossed it about. hail was hitting my car too.. powerful storm!!

Wow. I think Warsaw got spared. I took a video of what looked like a funnel cloud. Nothing happened (thank the lord). But we got a lot of wind, lightning, rain, and small pea to gumball sized hail. Not that bad.

University Mall got it bad. Every car had extensive hail damage and many had broken windows. My daughter works their and said it was horrible. I saw the truck last night. It looks bad.

I live just west of Hickory by Edison - - I had tons of hail in my yard, ranging from marble to brussel sprout size; add the wind to those hail pellets hitting the window, it was pretty scarey! But, luckily, no damage...

maybe there's something to the whole global warming thing after all. Since a storm is just Mother Nature's way of getting rid of excess energy, and excess heat causes excess energy . . .

We didn't get any by Dragoon Trail either. Lucky I guess!

Niles had some trees down but only saw one on a house on North 12th street that split and landed on top of a house a block south of me. Think we lucked out. only lost a couple of small limbs off my tree.
