SOUTH BEND — For Brian Bishop, nights are the hardest.

“When you turn off the lights in bed and you’re alone, and when you wake up in the morning, those are probably the most difficult times.”

He says it’s difficult to fully adjust to the notion that his wife of 10 1/2 years, the mother of his three children, is gone. On February 2, someone walked into a Tinley Park, Ill. Lane Bryant Store and shot six women. Five died, including Bishop’s wife, Jeni. Police called it a botched robbery and, within days, released a sketch of the suspect with help from the only woman in the store who survived.

But nearly five months later, despite tips from the public and pleas from police, there have been no arrests made. Although Bishop is updated every few weeks on the status of the investigation, he said he tries to avoid the details.

“There was so much early on … news that would get your hopes up,” he said. Now, he said he just wants to know when the killer is caught.

“I’m comfortable with the fact that I know they (police) are working hard to try and get him and they and I are both just looking for and needing that break.

“I have to believe there's somebody out there that knows the guy or knows something about him that he couldn't keep quiet or he didn't work alone or whatever the case may be. That person just needs to come forward. Either it grows on their conscience or they break a law and need an out and they’re willing to give him up. That’s, I think, what we’re waiting for. At least I am … but they’ll get him.”

At home, Bishop tries to keep Jeni’s memory alive by showing pictures and sharing stories with their three children, ages 7, 5, and 11 months. He’s also stopped by the Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit where Jeni was a nurse. Last month, the hospital presented the first Jeni Bishop Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Most of all, he misses her companionship.

"It’s just the small interaction that, as a husband and wife after 10-and- a-half-years you take for granted: little conversations or even an argument. It would be nice just to have an argument … just a few moments of extra time; but that’s not going to happen. So you have to try not to dwell on what you can’t have and try to focus and be thankful for what you do have,” said Bishop.

He said that includes a great support system from family and friends. Bishop returned to work in March on his birthday. Family and friends help take care of the children.

“We’ve formed a team and everybody’s been great at pitching in and doing what needs to be done,” said Bishop. “It’s a series of peaks and valleys and the peaks are more frequent than the valleys now, and the valleys aren’t as long as they were back in February.”

Police said they have fingerprints from the murderer, but the prints do not match anyone currently in a criminal database. There is a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

don't try to tell the anti-gun morons anything. they know it all yet they want to break the law themselves by taking our guns. sorry, loser, it's called the right to bear arms.

From the excellent sketches, we all know what this killer looks like. And we know what he sounds like. I cannot figure out why he has not been located yet. He must have fled the Chicago area right away or ws not even from the area. May God bless Scott and his children and all those helping them. This is such a truly sad situation. Scott is far stronger than I could ever be in such a situation.

2:40 PM, You would have been pleased to see a good guy with a gun permit take this guy down before he did what he did.

to Stop the Savages, you are wrong in what your view is. Unfortunately sometimes violence is needed to stop violence. Sometimes bad guys die because of what they do. Break into my house and meet my handguns by looking at the muzzles. There are 300,000 LEGALLY armed citizens in Indiana every day and very few are involved in crimes with those weapons. You problaby wouldn't mind my gun if it saved your bacon some time

You can not use violence to stop violence. What we DO NOT NEED are more crazy gun-nuts running the streets practicing their own vigilante style justice. How do you stop the violence? Well, improving the economy, providing universal healthcare for every citizen, revitalizing abandoned neighborhoods and increasing the police presence are good places to start. We need to combat the root causes of crime, not the symptoms of it. Arming the populace is WORST possible thing to do.

It is so sad that this happened. But people HAVE to take a stand, just as our ancestors did. Learn how to use a firearm and learn how to protect yourself. People have been protecting themselves for thousands of years. We need to stop feeling so insulated and step back into reality. There are evil people in the world. STOP THEM before they kill you or anyone else.

Every now and then I stop and think of this wonderful family and the special person that Jenny was. Though I didn't know Jenny, I felt like her sunny personality shined through and touched the lives of many; even mine. She is a brave person, and is thought of with great respect and admiration.

Botched robbery my eye. Nobody robs a store when it is opening, no money there then, it was a hit. When the cops start treating it that way and look at the local victims and there relationships, they will start finding leads.

I lost my mom at 12. I know what these poor children are and will continue to go through. Because of this evil act these angels will never see there mom again. Please someone knows who did this. Help the police in bringing this family some justice. May God be with this family.

I still think of your family. I was glad to read this article. God knows who did it and the criminal will reap his judgment someday. I pray your family has peace and many happy days in the future. Give your kids a hug for me.

When I read this story I got chills and teared up. I can't even imagine what this family has gone through and will go through for a long time. What kind of person could do something so horrible. Now not only is her husband left without a wife, 3 young children now have to grow up without their mom. If someone knows who this person is I really hope they come forward. How could anyone live with themself knowing that someone did something so horrible.

I feel so sorry for her family. She looks like someone who always smiled and had such a pretty smile.
