A man and wife were rescued after their car flipped and landed upside down in a water-filled ditch in LaPorte County Sunday night.
Police say they received a 911 call from 56-year-old Gerald Kornaus around 7:00 p.m. Kornaus told dispatchers he lost control of his car on an icy road near the 1500 South and State Road 39.
He told dispatchers his 2004 red Pontiac Vibe flipped and landed upside down in a ditch.
While water filled the car, Kornaus and his wife were on the phone with 911. They stayed on the phone with dispatchers until help arrived.
It took first responders from the Hanna Township Fire Department about 15 minutes to arrive on scene because the roads were so bad and they were having a hard time finding the location of the accident.
Fire Chief Tony Wallace tells WSBT that another vehicle was parked on the side of the road and the occupants were able to flag down the emergency crew.
The assistant fire chief was able to free Kornaus and his wife, who were suspended by their seat belts.
They did not suffer any injuries.
