(WSBT photo) MISHAWAKA — A catastrophe team has rolled into town to help after severe storms ripped through the area over the weekend. Many people are dealing with their insurance companies after the Father’s Day hail storm. Golf ball and even baseball-sized hail pounded cars and houses. State Farm Insurance has arranged a drive-thru event to help their policy holders file claims. The State Farm Catastrophe Team set up a “Tent City” outside Home Depot in Mishawaka. They expect to stay there for the next 3 weeks and help more than 2,000 drivers. On Thursday one car showed up after another – all with one thing in common. “A lot of little holes,” said driver Kathy Molnar. “Right here,” said Bill Vanslager as he pointed the damage on his car. “And then there's some on the hood." Emilie Thompson explained, “I thought it was fine and then I came out from work during my break and there are 50 to 100 dings in the hood. I'm like wow." Scratches, dents and nicks from a severe storm on Father's Day. “We were having dinner at Papa Vino’s with my son and daughter-in-law and all of a sudden it was raining and the hail came down,” said Molnar. “It's like unreal. I'd never seen it so bad." But for State Farm's Catastrophe Team, the wrath of Mother Nature has become second nature. “I think this is just going to be one of those seasons where we see damages from storms. Hopefully not anymore up here,” said State Farm’s Jim Slaven. Already State Farm has had 876 auto claims and 130 house claims filed in South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart County. They expect this event to add even more. “I think we'll run through about 140 a day at this site,” said Slaven of the cars coming through. Representatives with State Farm are assessing the damage, filing claims and even writing checks for some drivers on the spot. For Bill Vanslager it’s a check for more than $1,700. While he still remembers the storm – “It was terrible. I mean, I thought it was a tornado coming through. That's how bad it was." His only concern now is on what he needs to fix. “I hope that covers it,” he said of his check. The State Farm event is by appointment only. You’ll need to contact your insurance agent first. How much you get back depends on your type of coverage and your deductible. Other insurance companies are also seeing a lot of claims following the storm. Liberty Mutual, for example, has had 150 auto claims filed just this week. Their best advice if you've had damage is to contact your agent as soon as possible.
