SOUTH BEND — South Bend police are investigating a violent home invasion that occurred on the city’s northeast side near Notre Dame early Thursday morning.

A 34-year-old woman told police she was hit in the face with a gun, dragged by her hair and tied up during the robbery, in which two masked men with guns reportedly asked for money before stealing TVs and computers.

The victim, who lives at the home in the 1300 block of White Oak Drive, told police she was in the home’s basement about 5:30 a.m. when she heard a noise in the kitchen. She walked to the kitchen and saw a man dressed in all black holding a gun.

She tried to hide in a closet, police said, but the assailant dragged her out and asked her where the money was. She told the robber she had no cash. The man hit her in the face with a “machine gun type handgun,” police said, and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her upstairs.

The suspect handed her to another man, also an assailant, who already was in an upstairs bathroom, according to police. That man also asked her for money.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy who was in a nearby bedroom with several children told police he heard a noise in the bathroom. The second assailant reportedly found the boy and made him lie on the bathroom floor, and told the female victim to lie on top of him.

While the first robber removed two large plasma TVs and two laptop computers from the residence, the other assailant pointed a gun at the two victims, tied them together, and placed them in the hallway, police said.

Shortly after the robbers left the home, the boy was somehow able to get a knife and cut them free before police were called.

The victims had very little suspect information to give police, other than they were both wearing black ski masks with holes cut over their eyes. One of the assailants kept telling the victims they were from Chicago, police said. No arrests have been made.

The female victim had someone drive her to the hospital for treatment. She was unavailable for comment when a reporter went to the home Thursday afternoon. No other information was provided about the children, although police said there may have been six in the home.

Capt. Phil Trent, a South Bend police spokesman, called the assault serious but did not know what would have led the suspects to target that home and if the robbery was a random act.
