SOUTH BEND — Susan R. Hancock, director of St. Joseph County Community Corrections, has been charged with receiving stolen property, a Class D felony.

A grand jury indicted Hancock and two others, Michael E. Hancock and Ross G. Yoder, on June 13. The indictment reads:

"On or about the 25th day of July, 2007, Susan R. Hancock did knowingly receive, retain, or dispose of property of another person that has been the subject of theft, to wit: musical instruments belonging to Conn-Selmer, Inc. ..."

However, as is usual in grand jury indictments, information describing the alleged crimes was not made public.

Bill Bruinsma, chairman of the St. Joseph County Community Corrections Board, said the board would meet Monday to discuss the matter.

St. Joseph County Commissioner Bob Kovach, D-3rd District, said the commissioners would hear a recommendation from the board before deciding how to proceed.

St. Joseph County Commissioner Steve Ross, D-2nd District, said he had not heard about the case, when contacted by The Tribune for comment earlier Monday.

"If, in fact, the indictment is true," he said, "it’s extremely disappointing."

Hancock appeared in court Monday in front of Judge John M. Marnocha, who set a trial date in her case for Oct. 2.

Hancock declined comment as she left the courthouse.
