SOUTH BEND — A startling discovery in a South Bend neighborhood Tuesday night. Animal Control removed nearly two dozen dogs from a garage.

Police were called to a house on California Street. They found 22 dogs inside the garage. Many of the animals were cramped into pens together.

Officials say they were in varying degrees of health. Many had matted hair, eye infections and skin conditions.

"It looks like it's somebody that's involved in breeding the dogs. Every dog that we did remove from the property was a purebred dog that would have a market value for it," said Kim Lucas from Animal Control.

Animal Control hopes to get a warrant Wednesday because it believes there are many more dogs inside the house.
