ELKHART, Ind. — Elkhart authorities arrested a Mishawaka man Friday after he tried to put gas in the tank by trading prescription drugs to the attendant.

About 10 p.m., police were called to the Martin's Super Market in the 1200 block of North Nappanee Street after the man pushed a van up to the gas pumps, approached the clerk and offered to trade a Xanax tablet for gasoline.

The clerk turned down the popular anti-anxiety tablet and notified store security, who called Elkhart police to the scene.

When the 31-year-old man was confronted, he admitted to trying to make the trade, police said.

The man was arrested for dealing a controlled substance.

Well, I personally feel sorry for this guy. Obviously he is broke, like many of us. I agree with some here saying at least he didn't try and steal the gas, and even then, I would feel sorry for him. If the truth be known, he might be possibly working a full time job, but you know, by the time you pay the bills, especially those outrageous utility bills, buy some food, there is NO money left anymore. There will be more and more of this in the future!!! Boy, don't we just LOVE America???????? yay!

I hope that if you're ever down and out others will be more compassionate to you than you are to this fellow. Yes, he was foolish. We all agree to that. It appears he was desperate. We may all be in his shoes soon. I worry for his future and his family if he has one. Now what? I have seen how the privileged youth of today are ready to discount need. Maybe that applies to some of you...maybe not. I prefer to help my fellow man. I give to the food bank. Is that a bad thing too?

I come to read the news and once in a while end up reading the comments. I can't believe how many feel this guys is pitaful who tried to trade his pill for gas??? Now it's our governments fault??? WSBT is at fault for reporting NEWS?? Get a grip people, the guy was an idiot regadless of how much he needed gas. Did he ask if he could work for the gas? Who's at fault for that?

Oh sorry! I guess that is really funny that someone was so desperate as to exchange meds for gas. You are right about one though. We are losing everything we have all worked hard for while our delightful president has that dumb stupid look on his face 24/7!

Sorry, "Elkhart". There's a lot of us in South Bend that don't have lives, and the few possessions we have are about to be taxed away by our local government. We find extreme humor in these comments, and it's all that keeps us going. Please don't take it away from us.

Why are people so rude and heartless when it comes to reponding. How do you know he is a drug addict? Are you assuming? Maybe he has anxiety. You know there are people who do. Maybe he lost a job or can't find one and needs on badly. Can you only find something negagive to say. It is people like you that give good caring people a bad name. You should really keep your nasty comments to yourself. No one here is interested in what you have to say.

maybe if the addict wasn"t hooked on prescription drugs like 50% of the US his first priority would of been buying gas, Not a buzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy probably lost his job or doesn't have money to get to his job. That attendant should've just made the trade instead of making a federal case out of it. Sheesh, how rude!

The man sounded pretty desperate. I hope after this is all over, things for him turn around for the better. But sadly were probably going to hear more of this, as this country is steadily going into the crapper.

Its really a sad situation. While I am not condoning gas/drug trade, at least he didn't steal the gas literally. Things need to change in this country and fast. So many losing jobs and just surviving all of this is scary. I wish I had been at that gas station. I would have helped him out with a little gas. We are supposed to try and help our fellow man when we can.

I guess I am naive on prescription drug street prices. One Xanax is worth $50, the same as a tank of gas?

Sunday, Jun 29 at 10:20 PM Cheri wrote ...

Let me put it this way Cori. I wish the gentleman had approached me. I would have given him $20 worth of gas and wished him a good day. I am sorry you are so jaded. I cannot imagine that you would feel the same way if a starving man stole some bread. As Jake said, the man did not steal the gas. He probably would have been better off. He probably would have gotten away with it. He was trying to "pay" his way. Since I am 60, I would be surprised if I could "grow up" much more!

Cheri believes the man shouldn't be arrested for breaking the law? Grow up!

My goodness, I came out a bit ripe on that one. I'm still getting the hang of web paging and i guess my chop and paste got away from me. I meant to say I guess it's good the guy was willing to trade rather than just steal stuff like some folks. My brother takes drugs for his gas, but he never tried selling them to anyone. Sure sorry about any confusion that might have caused. God love you.

I am heartbroken. Here is a man that probably needs the Xanax as well as the gas. I understand he did a stupid thing but we are in such a mess in the US! I have no idea how the majority of Americans are suppose to even get to work with these outrageous gas prices! We have gas reserves and we arrest this poor man? Let's arrest the government for mismanaging OUR resources!!!

Hey Jake, there is a huge black market for most prescription drugs. They are good for those that need help with certian problems. But for others taking them is no different than smoking weed, crack, or doing various other illegal drugs. Its all about that high. Dude probly had a few pills but didnt want to leave himself short. Guess its better than trying to steal or rob someone for the gas, I agree with you.

Well he didn't get the gas, but still got a free ride..to jail lol

I'd be surprised if there was a market for such things. Of course, I was surprised when he started taking them, too. Surprised and relieved. Makes the family get-togethers a lot less awkward.
