ELKHART — A simple evening bike ride turned sour Saturday evening for Jeff Bateman of Osceola.

Bateman, 44, was riding a bicycle on the east side of Ash Road, north of Charla Lane, when a vehicle struck him with the sideview mirror.

Bateman fell to the ground as the vehicle fled the scene, Elkhart County authorities said.

Emergency crews transported Bateman to Saint Joseph Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they are looking for a black Chevy pickup.

According to state law bike riders have all the rights AND responsibilities of auto drivers.

I like to ride my bike. I'm very cautious about cars approaching when I am unable to ride on the side walk. It seems silly to ride in the road these days with all the careless drivers. I also believe bikes do NOT have the right away

It seems hard to believe you could hit someone and not even realize it but then again, we all play our music and maybe he just tapped him and never heard of felt it. Glad the biker is okay. Hopefully, the guy in the truck just didn't realize what he did but after seeing this on the news maybe he will turn himself in and explain. That would be the right thing morally to do.

Unfortunately the world isn't going to get its act together. The Bible has told us that.

This world has about 20 more years to get its act together. It would be a near impossible achievement given our history but with tools and resources like computers and internets it seems like satan has established his own theme park. I don't know what is going on with Jake or K or ken or anybody else but you are spending more time tearing apart then you are building. Keep it up and you will find out what REAL destruction is like. I for one will not visit this site again. Read a paper, watch news

First off, It was WRONG to leave the scene of the accident. Wake up people,Chances are,The driver of the vehicle was doing something else illegal..No insurance,No license,etc...It's a no brainer...

I agree, anonymous K, people shouldn't post just to badmouth other people. What do you say you go first? God love you, man.

To Jake and Ken, please grow up and act like adults, not 5 year olds! I'm so sick of people commenting just to complain or bad mouth someone else! no one is perfect, and I'm sure you both have done some things in your life that you aren't proud of and if they ever made the paper or the news, I doubt seriously you would want people making comments like that about you! Opinions are fine, but don't make comments about something you didn't witness and no nothing about!

You know, Ken, usually when all someone's got is name calling they really aint got nothing at all. Unless you read minds like those tv people or something you got no clue what that driver seen or heard. Probably gave you done as roadkill. We could do a test, I'll sit in my truck and you can smack your face into my mirror a couple times, I'll tell you if I hear it or not. Shame about your sister, seems flighty.

I was injured by a hit-and-run driver back in 2001, who was never caught. My wreck was a little worse than Jeff's, and because they never caught the driver that hit me I was only able to get what little medical attention and rehab that the state provided or that I was able to pay for out of pocket, which wasn't much. And as for how serious getting hit with a side mirror can be, ask the widow of Larry Shwartz.

Hey everybody! It's Jake the jerk weighing in with his notion that the driver was probably under the influence. Well, Jake the jerk, I was hit once by a truck's mirror and the driver didn't stop then either, I wasn't knocked down and he didn't feel or hear any impact so he figured there was no issue. This guy on the bike may have loss his balance and took a little longer to actually fall. My sister once fell off her bike because she was startled by a car and everyone assumed she had been hit.

He was probably drunk, or on that crackle cocaine. Not the bike rider, the driver I mean. I guess the bike guy could have been tipping the bottle a bit too, but there's nothing wrong with that. If you're sober enough to ride a bike, you're not really drunk anyway I always say.
