MISHAWAKA — An Indian restaurant is back on probation after, health officers say, they discovered overflowing water and sanitation issues inside the establishment.

The Taj Indian Restaurant, 508 W. McKinley Ave., had just come off probation in March for an August 2007 incident involving a cockroach infestation.

At a hearing Wednesday at the St. Joseph County Health Department, officials described a June 19 inspection in which they found clogged drains, carpets saturated with water and plugged toilets.

Employees at the restaurant said they called a plumber to fix the problem as soon as possible and that they have since cleaned up the restaurant.

THEY ALSO NEED TO INVESTIGATE THE OWNERS OF VESUVIO'S PIZZA FOR PAYING THEIR EMPLOYEES UNDER THE TABLE AND NOT PAYING MINIMUM WAGE ONLY TWO DOLLARS PER DELIVERY AND THEIR TIPS.

THEY NEED TO GO AROUND AND SHUT DOWN ALL OF THESE SO CALLED SMALL FAMILY RUN PIZZA JOINTS LIKE VESUVIO'S PIZZA THAT DOESN'T KEEP THEIR DOUGH OR THEIR VEGETABLES OR SAUCE REFRIGERATED.

Why don't they just shut them down instead of putting them on probation? Although I am sure they will go out of business now after the community reading this story . I know I will never go there. That is just gross.

i think the health department is getting a share of some pizzas because that place should be SHUT DOWN before someone dies from food illness

one restaurant that i'm truely disgusted by our HEALTH DEPARTMENT is a pizza place, i worked there for about 2 years and i mean i was disgusted, mixing pizza dough with dirty hands, sausage everywhere. a rag with cheese was left on the sink for a coulpe of days and when i went to lift it up there was a appx. 200 maggotes, i felt so sorry for the people who would eat there. after seeing all of that i couldn't take it any more and quit. they don't wear gloves and wear wife beaters.

The last owners of that location (when it was Shalimar), really took pride in that place, it was clean, they were friendly. Really has gone down hill since. It's a well known fact that white trash has extreme ignorance for anyone possibly different than them.....when they're not buying cigarettes, mountain dew, and meth....

Sounds to me like they should try a different business outside the food industry.

i believe that when all people apply for restaurant permit they need to be educated on do's/dont's of restaurant/health rules. there is NO respect for regulations, sanitation, etc. Close them down until they understand THEY MUST COMPLY, wouldnt feed my dog from there, I care too much for her well being

Well what did the Health Department expect them to do with the cockroaches cook them?? Maybe instead they just tried to flush them into the system...
