SOUTH BEND — A civil hearing to determine who will get custody of 23 dogs found in a garage was continued Thursday in civil court.

The owner of the dogs, discovered in a California Avenue garage, wants six of the animals back, according to court testimony. Animal Control officials are attempting to retain ownership of the animals in order to send them to rescue agencies or possibly adopt them out.

The mix of poodles, Malteses, bulldogs and other breeds was found inside the garage June 24. Many were discovered with matted fur, skin conditions, and some had a genetic eye disorder, according to Animal Control officials.
