NILES -- Police are investigating a vandalism spree in Niles. They say a group of children severely damaged and even destroyed parts of Polly's Place Wednesday. It's a domestic violence home that provides safety and healing for women and their children.

No one was staying there at the time because the home was being renovated.

Workers say it's hard to imagine kids caused so much damage.

Peggy Caine has been involved with Polly's Place for nearly a decade. She was shocked to see the years of hard work damaged beyond recognition.

"It makes me sick because I've been a battered woman. It's just a place where we try to make them find their lives again,” said Caine.

The vandals did more than just ransack and damage the home. Police believe they headed out back and set the computer lab on fire — a place workers renovated a few years ago.

"We want to teach these women how to use computers so they can go out in the world today and work," Caine explained.

Virgina Cobb lives near Polly's Place and helps oversee the property. She just returned home when she spotted one of the vandals.

"I went around front and there was a kid coming out the door. They had broken glass and everything all out of the door," said Cobb.

Police say four children are responsible for the destruction. Their ages range from 7 to 11 years old.

"I was shocked. I had a hard time understanding when I got here that those little kids sitting on the lawn were the ones who did this," said Caine.

But Caine says Polly's Place has faced many challenges in the past. And this one is no different.

"It's gone for the moment. But I have faith that it will be back," she said.

Caine says insurance will help cover most of the cost. But they're always accepting donations. You can send them to:

Police say it's likely the 10-year-old and the 11-year-old will appear in juvenile court. As for the 7-year-old and 9-year-old, police say their cases will be forwarded to the prosecutor because it's rare for children so young to be involved in a crime.

Why is it that someone always has to bring race in to it? It doesn't matter if they are purple, they damaged someone else's property, there SHOULD be consequences!

Exactly. It's children having children, making bad choice after bad choice and thinking that someone else will take care of the whole mess.

these kids are poster children for birth control.

gee i wonder if the homes these kids come from have any type of domestic violence? that would be ironic.glad to see the npd found these kids quickly and there are other crimes that go unsolved.what these women need is a backbone and a gun and strong male relatives and most of all YAHWEH. that will solve the problem of domestic violence.

MAKE THE PARENTS PAY PERIOD. Am curious if they are all related or just friends but since they are minors I guess we will never know. Watch your neighbors...

Personally, I think the sad excuses for parents of these miniture felons should have all children permanently removed from their care and a black ball against EVER receiving aid of any kind from any government agency- once they get out of jail, that is. And every paycheck for the rest of their lives should be garnished until every penny of damage is repaired. And, they should have to do the physical labor. Not one or the other, all of the above. Shame on them.

These children belong in a detention center where someone with half a brain (obviously something their parents are lacking) can teach them that vandalism, arson and breaking/entering are CRIMES. Perhaps these families should also be investigated by CPS and see if there are other children in the homes that need to be placed with responsible parties. The parents should also pay for ALL necessary repairs to Polly's Place and serve on the clean up crew along with the little budding felons.

I found the kids in the house. Needles to say I was very upset. BUT, we also had a group of kids from one of the church camps come last week and worked for two days cleaning and doing yard work. There is also another girl that is doing a shoe drive. I guess there is good and bad everywhere.

I agree with "been battered". Those kids and their parents should have to fix that home. They probably have no idea what hard work is. Now a days kids think that they are entitled to anything and do not think of the consequences. Problem is often the parents think the same way. Those younger children had better have some kind of legal punishment as well as the older kids. How will they learn that crime doesn't pay if there are no consequences?!?!

So sad that kids this young are already in trouble with the law. The parents need to be held accoutable as well. Children live what they learn!

man.. kids these days have no respect for anyone or anything... i think they need to be locked up till their 18.. maybe theyll learn their lesson... their 'parents' should be ashamed of themselves and their kids

What the heck is wrong with so many kids today?! I have six of my own and they know who lays the law. Where are the parents?

I raised 4 children. At this age parents should know where kids are and be responsable for there actions.

I noticed that they don't take any male victims...but this is still a tragedy and a reflection of our sad state of affairs. We were hellions as youngsters too, but I don't quite remember doing anything this bad.

That is shameful. Round up the kids AND the parents and put their butts to work repairing the damage and cleaning up the mess. If they're old enough to make it....let 'em see how much work it is to go behind them and clean up.

i think this is aweful!!! this was a place women and children could get help. the children these days are cruel and have no respect for personal property or people. i fully understand that these vandals are very young but,I think it is very important that these vandals be taught a lesson. ihave full faith in our community and we will get through this. i also think that the parents should be help partly responsible for not keeping a eye on there children.

Send the kids that did this to a juvenile justice center till their 18 and I'll bet they'll think twice about doing something like that again...
