ELKHART — Some people have found a new way to honor fallen heroes. The Wall of Heroes in Elkhart honors 150 Indiana servicemen and women, police officers, and firefighters who died in the line of duty since the start of the War in Iraq.

A veteran and the family of a Marine killed in Iraq spent the last two years trying to find land and money to build the monument. They still don't have the money but say the monument will be built with or without community support.

The usual fanfare was absent -- no crowds, no band, no officers in uniform.

There were just a dozen family members in T-shirts listening to recorded Taps.

"We are here to honor those killed in Iraq, my nephew being one of them," said Judy Davis, the aunt of Corporal Aaron Seal who was killed by sniper fire in Iraq in 2006.

Corporal Seal of Elkhart is one of 150 faces on the Wall of Heroes.

"They've done a nice job. The men and women are still missed and loved," said Davis.

Freedom is not free, and neither is the wall. Don Fisher had to buy the lot and build the $13,000 monument, which will include framed pictures and brass name plaques for all the Indiana uniformed men and women who died in the line of duty.

"I don't believe we pay enough attention to the service men and women who give their lives for the freedom of this country," said Fisher.

But donations are slow and $5,000 is still needed.

"These men and women are dying for our freedom. I don't understand why these people don't back them up," said Fisher.

Fisher feels he doesn't even have Mayor Dick Moore's support.

"We wish the mayor could have been here, but he had some other plans," he said at the start of the unveiling.

But with or without support, the monument is going up.

Money is still needed. Donations can be made to the Chase Bank on Nappanee Street.

The monument is still missing pictures, particularly of firefighters. Family members are asked to donate those as well before the dedication in September.

I plan on being there for your rededication. I lost my son, PFC David A. Kirkpatrick 4-27-07 in Fallujah Iraq. We have had several K.I.A. that were from Grant County. I appreciate what you are doing and will be sure to give a donation. We are from Matthews, In. Around 3 hours from Elkhart. I am sorry that your community and Mayor didn't give any support for this project, after all, these young men and women died for them also. They are Heroes and will not be forgotten. I am the daughter of person who created this wall. It's is at 508 Oakland avenue. The mailing address is PO Box 1205 Elkhart, Indiana. 46516. I know we will be have a rededication on September 13th. Time is unknown at this point. We will make a whole afternoon of it if the Hiveley Lively Band is available. We can't leave the pictures out there yet because we can't afford to get the acrylic glass for it yet. But we are there monday thru Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

First off, there is a mistake in the article, we didn't have family killed there and Aaron's family was the only family that came to it. We couldn't get no publicity for it until now. It is at 508 Oakland Avenue in Elkhart. It's at RWD sales.

To the family of Cpl Aaron Seal, a Hero, who gave his life to keep us Free, please accept my sincere condolences. I lost my brother, Cpl. Thomas Steven Hickman 8/26/1970 in Vietnam. That was 38 yrs. ago and seeems like yesterday to me. It doesn't get any easier it just gets bearable. I started Gold Star Siblings , with no backing from anyone, I too wanted to build a memorial for the Indiana Veterans and I like you had no backing from the community. Why? I just want to say, I know how you feel.
