LAPORTE — Students, teachers and staff at Hailmann Elementary School in LaPorte worked for the past year to raise money for new playground equipment. But their dreams went up in smoke when someone set fire to all that new equipment.

Police believe someone may have set the fire intentionally. It happened in the middle of the day with no reports of storms and no reports of fireworks in the area.

The fire destroyed $40,000 worth of playground equipment. It was so intense it melted most of the equipment to the pavement.

It’s hard to tell it was once playground equipment — the metal is charred, the rubber melted, and the wood burnt to a crisp.

But that's not all that has people stunned; it's all the hard work that went into getting it.

"I don't understand why someone would burn that down," said Javon Harris who plays at the playground.

The playground at Hailmann Elementary School is a popular spot.

"We usually come here every day and play,” said his brother Austin Harris.

And the idea of a new playground sounded awfully good to kids and parents.

“There were a few bumps and bruises with the old stuff so if they would have nice plastic stuff — that would have been really nice," said Heather Loucks, who lives near the school.

But on Saturday a lot of hard work was gone.

"You can see it all went up," said Randy Thorpe of LaPorte Schools. "There's been a lot of people involved in raising money and working to fund this project. It's really sad that this happened, that's for sure."

In fact, the PTA and kids worked for years to get the equipment — 90 percent of their fundraisers last school year went toward the project.

And that means whether destroying it was a joke, an accident or someone just being mean, it's sure to break a lot of young kids' hearts.

"All the money that they worked for, all the hard work that they did is all burned up and now they can't play on a new play set that they worked hard for,” Austin said. “I don't know why someone did that.”

The new playground was also handicap accessible — something one of the PTA members told WSBT News the current playground is not.

But there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

School administrators said Monday that they are working with the playground equipment company and their insurance company. They are optimistic they'll get their new playground before the start of the school year.

Ah, Ha Ha Ha, yeah that was pretty funny, burning up tens of thousands of dollars in equipment and crushing the hopes and dreams of little kids. You folks crack me up. I'm going to laugh even harder when you land in prison. If you drop the soap, I'll crack up. Won't be the only crack that's up, will it? Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Hailmann's principal is Mrs. Denise Sanders and this was her first year with the school. She was one of many that fought so hard for the children to get this new playground. She did a great job this year at Hailmann. I don't know why people are dragging her into this!

There were also reports in the Hailmann area around the same time that several flags were found burned along with empty beer bottles thrown in the bushes. I wonder if the two are related? I don't understand what has gotten into people around here. It was a holiday weekend and people are out acting crazy. Maybe we need more police around! Oh wait, there's no money for that.

Where's the school principal in all this? Why has he not said anything

The Herald Argus report says they do believe it was arson, and that they are still looking into it. If they thought it was going to catch on fire by itself I doubt the fire dept. wouldn't have left the rest of it sitting in the parking lot at the school.

I work at Hailmann. Other than the playground being burnt to the ground, there were other packages in the bus lot that were broken into and things taken. That makes me believe that it was not "spontaneous combustion". There have my MANY "accidents" around LaPorte lately, and they are usually little punks messing with the community. I agree that kids today are not taught any of the morals I was just a few years ago. What is our world coming to..

Lester is making a valid point. Nothing in the story says any evidence was found that indicates it was anything other than spontaneous combustion. I'm not saying it was, just making a point. It's like wet hay stacked in the heat. Once the playground was put together, it wouldn't be packed tightly and the risk of combustion would be gone.

The packaged equipment was sitting on the parking lot. There were NO wood chips anywhere near it! If you don't know all the facts then maybe you should drive over there and take a look at it for yourself! The old playground is more dangerous. I just have to laugh at how people who know nothing about this have ALL the answers!

I am a mom and I understand child saftey but you people act like this equipment is just going to blow up like some time bomb while kids are on it...if any of you can say your child is perfectly safe in your home your nuts because anything can happen but dont keep your children from living life They will grow up having never played at the play ground saying "My mom didn't let me play on that because it might BLOW UP!" dont get in the car an under maintained car is likely to combust just as well.

Don't matter if it's put up or not yet, Mom of Hailman, If there was a thick layer of wood chips UNDER it they should check into it. This is happening all over the country... they are just now figuring out that it's not always arson, but spontaneous combustion. So, back to my point: Can anyone report if this area already had layers of wood chips? All the rain and then hot temps equalls rotting which equalls heat. Add it up people and quit yelling at me.

This is just horrible and if they catch who did it you know darn well they won't be able to pay for it. It is a sad time now - whenever we read a paper, listen to news, or whatever and it is full of horrible things people are doing to other people. Shows that a bunch of *** have no respect, morals, religion, love, and the list goes on. Shame on whoever did this. Hopefully there was insurance and this can be fixed by the time school starts. Good Luck.

Lester~This playground was not put up yet. For the record, the playground these children are playing on now is over 20 years old I believe and a very dangerous one. No slides, teeter totters, just old wooden climb-on toys and they're all on sand. It's the worst playground in LaPorte. These children NEED a new one, it's not even about just having a new one. Every other school around here has such a nice one and this is a crappy old dangerous playground that I cringe watchin' kids on

All the moisture from all the rain, the wood rotts and makes it's own heat, plus the hot sun... ignition! Here is a video from Texas I found from another CBS Station thereupon: http://cbs11tv.com/video/?id=20598@ktvt.dayport.com

if they were using wood chips on the play area instead of sand, there may have been a case of spontaneous combustion in the chips. There have been reports of this happening all over the US, mostly in summer where heat levels are higher... One I read about was caught on security cam... it was smoldering and the whole area suddenly burst into flame. nobody around! just sayin'. Google it and you'll all see the stories.

Some research on the internet reveals installed these plastic playgrounds are very flammable, there have been several cases where they have been ignited and they burn quite readily, producing inextinguishable flames and billowing toxic smoke. There appear to be very few regulations as to the flammability of these things. I see NO flame spread and smoke ratings anywhere on these plastic play structures. I saw what the MCD fire in Niles did to one of these things, I wouldn't let a child near one.

You get anything hot enough it burns. Wood, plastic, kittens, whatever, it'll burn. How safe is any kid on these huge playgrounds they make these days? Maybe the pyro was trying to save someone's life, like in those tv shows where they do something strange to change the flow of time or whatever. Maybe some future president is going to that school, and burning that down will save his life so he can bring a new age of glory to the world or something. Nah, probably just some doofus.

The equipment was still wrapped in cardboard and was waiting to be installed. The packages had just been dropped off, so it's not like it was on fire with children on it.

My children are Hailmann students and they are heart broken. They knew how important it was to have new equipment so that the children with special needs could play on it. My daughter was looking forward to seeing her friend, Jay, climbing on the new playground in August. He was unable to play on the old one, and just sat and watched everyone else. My children don't understand why anyone would do this. I want everyone to know how hard these kids worked to raise that money. They did a great job.

I have to agree with Danger Will R. IS this sort of playground equipment that flamible? what if children had been playing on or near it with a lighter or something. Is this stuff really safe? Im going to look into this and check to see that out the local "plastic" playground equipment isn't a deadly torch waiting to go off. Im sorry to hear about the loss but I am more concerned why it would burn like that. Imagine the toxic fumes and flaming plastic.

I live in La Porte and it is very saddening how kids are let loose. Parents don't make their children mind . It is easier to let the kids do as they please then have them get upset with their parents. Many of the children are let loose because parents are at bars getting drunk or busy doing drugs. Many kids nowadays have no respect for anyone nor anything. Why? Because they haven't been taught "respect". Juvenile centers in all towns not just La Porte are overcrowded with misbehaved children.

I hope they catch the person or persons who did this and make them pay to have this playground restored. What a sick society we live in when people would destroy a playground.

That concerns me... a "childhood" play ground that burns so hot it melted most of the equipment to the ground ?? Hopefully there was an accelerant used. Otherwise maybe they need to look at new materials for a new playground.

That is terrible, what kind of IDIOT would do something like that!!$40,000.00, I hope to hell they catch them and make them pay!!

Monday, Jul 7 at 7:16 PM Anonymous wrote ...

We saw this blazing and saw lots of little kids standing around watching their new hopes for a playground go up in smokes with it, including my son who was in tears. I hope they catch whoeever did this. I'm stunned that someone would be so cruel. What a sad world we live in!!

This is totally awful!!! This spoils it for all of the little kids who wish to use the new equipment and some stupid jerk(s) - probably juvenile delinquents have done it. I sure hope that they catch 'em!!!!!
