ELKHART — The start of school may still be a couple months away, but school leaders are starting to work on next year's budget. At the top of their list of concerns is high gas prices.

Elkhart Community Schools are facing a possible 40 percent hike in diesel fuel prices for their buses. The school system says that means possible cuts in other areas.

This year, they set aside $600,000 to run the buses, and they're bracing for a big fuel cost increase starting in January.

“And it’s not final by any stretch, but the moment we're looking at $1 million as what we anticipate to be the minimal need that will have for diesel fuel to operate our bus fleet for the next year," explained Doug Hasler with Elkhart Community Schools.

Because of the increase, school officials are considering several ways to save money.

“We’re looking at everything including consolidation of bus routes,” Hasler said. “That's a very large undertaking — we do have 150 some buses. We have 13,000 students scattered across our school district.”

Bus drivers say they are well aware of the spike in diesel fuel costs and say they are willing to help the school system find a way to deal with any shortfall in fuel funding.

"We’re concerned about it just as much as everybody else because we don't know with our jobs and that if they're going to have to put routes together," said driver Judy Brown.

“We have to be flexible, to make the adaptations that we can, to keep everything going smoothly,” added driver Bob Fink.

In addition to possibly consolidating bus routes, school officials are looking at a couple of other options to save money. That may include raising the cost students pay to go to athletic events and looking at how long buses are allowed to idle.

SB spends a ton of m$'s to get kids to schools where their test scores, graduation rates are some of the lowest in the country-no $'s and buses are not the answer as a matter of fact it is a poor investment. I never road a bus. Sorry park the buses NOW. Big waste of $'s my tax $'s.

I didn't believe 10:08 anonymous, so I did some digging. It's true. South Bend is ranked 25th in 292 districts in terms of $ spent. If money made the difference, we'd be among the best school systems in the state. Instead, we're 12th from the bottom in reading and 7th from the bottom in math. I guess the only bright side is that elkhart schools are worse.

Sorry, but money does not educate. We are already spending far to much in South Bend. Their web site brags about its $219 Million budget for 21,000 students. That doesn't even include the overhead in Indianapolis. It's government waste at its finest (or worst).

Instead of making your comments on WSBT, maybe you should talk to your State Representative and the Governor. They are the ones taking money from schools with their property tax cut. You want kids to be educated, then STOP ALLOWING SCHOOL FUNDING TO BE CUT! OF ALL THINGS, EDUCATION SHOULD BE THE LAST THING THAT SHOULD BE ON LIMITED FUNDS. THE PROBLEM IS HIGH GAS PRICES, IT IS THE NEW PROPERTY TAX RELIEF. You may want to use your voter power and vote out Mitch. He is the one cutting $$$.

Children first in education. Do something about teaching our children with the best of teachers and evaluate their ability to communicate correctly with them. Children need to learn not to rob others, to lie or to cheat. So, more money should be raised for educating the young. The future is in your hands. Do not be cheap shot with children that need our help.
