MISHAWAKA — There is big economic news in the works involving AM General. A Troy, Mich. company says it's working on a plan to build a brand new line of taxis at the Mishawaka plant.

The vehicle is called the Standard Taxi, and it is described as an urban taxi.

It will have a ramp, making it more accessible for people in wheelchairs. It will also have more room and is low to the ground.

The Vehicle Production Group announced the agreement with AM General last December. According to VPG's website, they chose AM General for a number of reasons including its excellence in building vehicles and procuring parts.

Craig Mac Nab, a spokesperson for AM General, confirms a deal is in the works.

"The last I heard it was almost set, but not quite," he told WSBT News. "If the rest of the business comes together, we will be the guys that make the vehicle."

Mac Nab also said it's too early to speculate if the contract would mean adding more jobs.

If the deal is made, production would start next year in the H2 plant. It would not affect production at the Humvee plant.

There have been rumors AM General could lose their military contract because they're in competition to develop a new military vehicle. A spokesperson says the contract runs through next year and they'll have another contract after that.

The new military vehicle would be in addition to the existing Humvee production.

The future of General Motors' Hummer H2 is not as certain. Rising gas prices have been crippling sales in this country for the last several years. GM closed Thursday at its lowest share price since 1954, and they are considering selling the Hummer brand.

However, that's not the case overseas. General Motors reports sales are up 21 percent in Russia, and it had record sales in Europe for the first six months of this year.

Its amazing how one picture evokes the most intelligent to comment on things they know absolutely nothing about. Obviously none of them have had to try to find easy and quick transportation while wheelchair bound.

I can not believe you people! I want MY job--are you telling me that YOU would not and/or do not want YOUR job?! Please..blow smoke somewhere else but not to me. Everyone wants to know there job is there. No one wants to be on unemployement. This taxi is mostly for wheelchairs that can not get into a regular taxicab. Read everything before you jump! I WANT MY JOB! Hope you do too!

To, "Me" your so selfish! As long as you have a job, what is that crap? A.M General keeps making gas guzzlers that won't sell and you won't have a job, you idiot!! Will the car be accepted? Not if it sucks down gas. You wonder what the ride rates will be, to pay for the fuel?

Snide comment about the environment. Disparaging remark about AM General, followed closely by uncritical praise for hybrids. Finishing up with thoughtful analysis of the state of the economy while nodding slowly. Blowing it all with a completely incoherent remark. Pressing submit.

I'm glad AMG is providing jobs for many people in the area. This is a good thing and it helps people provide for there families. So who cares if the Hummer doesn't fit everyones style and I hope this new cab means more employment for the area to!

Say what you will, but if this comes through, my family will be taken care of for a little bit longer. I get paid to build things and I really don't care what those things look like. As long as on Friday, my supervisor gives me a check and the benefits remain, I am pretty much ok. At AM General, we do not design the vehicles, but rather build them for our customers. Thank you AM General for providing a living for me, and thus, my family. Be happy for your community!

Per the comments - looks like this is going to be the first taxi that will have to "pay" people to ride in it. This usually happens when MBA's get into the "I have a great idea" mode.

I've dropped a deuce that looks better than that car.

This is an early design which changes will have already been made. The newer model may be sleeker, but you have to keep into consideration the purpose as the article clearly states. It is a functional vehicle that aids in the transport of people in wheelchairs. Not to mention there will be a Compressed Natural Gas gas option. Oh and one more thing, lets keep bashing on AM general's ability to maintain jobs in this community. Don't just bash a story on mere words alone.

Oh I don't know, as long as it keeps cab fares down it will be an improvement I would say. I've rode in a few cabs and I never really cared what they look like as long as it gets me there.

Alot of these comments sounds like they are coming from people that are jealous of NOT working there! I am for anything that can and will be built there SO no more people will be unemployed! Oh thats right--we aren't suppose to care about that! Come on people--be glad that (HOPEFULLY) more jobs won't be lost. Or is it against the law to be happy for people that STILL have jobs?! Just a question.

Are you kidding me? That's even more ugly than a Scion! Please don't put that trash all over our roads. What about aesthetics?????? And what about fuel efficiency????? UNBELIEVABLE!

Come on Steve when has Hummmer built anything for fuel consumption? I am so with you on this. It's a brick on wheels. It won't affect the H2 production? I didn't know there was still a demand for that gas guzzlers? Here is a great idea. Get with the program and make acar atruck that does get better gas mileage and make it all in United States and not farm it out to the guys north or south of the borders. Let's make it all American!!!
