Michigan City authorities arrested nine people Sunday after a sweep of a beach area known for underage drinking parties.

Police officers, acting in partnership with the Indiana Governor's Council Task Force, converged on the area east of Michigan City's main beach about 1 p.m., police said in a statement.

With fireworks planned for Washington Park after dusk, law enforcement officials expected young people to gather at the beach area known as "Stop Two."

Officials said they also were responding to frequent noise complaints along the lakefront.

Using four all-terrain vehicles, officers arrested eight people for underage drinking. A ninth adult was arrested for public intoxication, authorities said.

None of the identities of those arrested have been released.
