CULVER — A Marshall County man uncovered a giant piece of history from the ice age in his back yard.

John Benedict and a friend were digging out a pond last month near Culver when they came across what turned out to be 12,000-year-old skeletal remains of a Mastodon.

State scientists and historians are digging out the rest of the remains to eventually put on display at the Indiana State Museum. Benedict talked with relatives and decided to donate the remains to the state.

Since the dig team began, they've found remains of a second Mastodon and perhaps even a third.

"We know there’s a mix of two animals here. We still have to go out into the middle (of the pond) to deal with that. There may be a separate animal out there … this is a great ice age site,” said Ron Richards, Chief Curator of Natural History at the Indiana State Museum.

“You go back all those years and these animals were walking around, it’s just humbling. It humbles you a bunch,” said Benedict.

Mastodon remains were found in another part of Marshall County in 2006.

Scientists say the large mammals could weigh about three tons, stand more than nine feet tall, and were fairly common in Northern Indiana during the ice age.

I was lucky enough to visit this site Friday 7/19 and I'm still astonished. Thanks to the very knowledgeable people working the dig, I learned a lot in addition to seeing first hand enormous bones and a gigantic tooth. About 12,000 years old, right out of Mother Earth and before our very eyes! Amazing!

John Benedict, what were you thinking donating the find to the state? Those bones are probably worth millions. The proceeds will probably end up in Guv Mitch's campaign chest.

Yeah, 12,000 years ago, this entire are was covered by glaciers. I wonder what caused them to go away? Excessive mastadon poo that released toxic gases into the air that a caused an ice-age global warming incident??

It is news -- especially since what people usually unearth around here are bodies.

I think they are mistaken...I have a 24,500 pound German Shepard. He buried those bones there a couple years ago.

My son was digging in the backyard and found an old Nike Air Jordan shoe. We contacted Nike and they are going to put it on display in their museum. What a great find! Something that has been in the ground since the early 80's, and now it will be on display for all to see!! Look out Marshall County!!!

What a wonderful find. Hard to believe this area was once in the ice age. I hope I can go see it when they put it on display.

Totally amazing. One time I came out in the yard and found an elephant. Not quite as big as mastadon, but pretty big. He trampled my daisies pretty good. Then a fella from the circus showed up and took him away. I'll never forget that.

How can it be 12000 years old? The pastor says the earth was created 6000 years ago. I would not regularly give money to somebody who was just selling me a line.

I agree this is an amazing find. There was a Mastodon found in Hancock county somewhere in the late 60"s or early 70's and as a child we were able to observe the dig to uncover the entire skeleton. It now is in the Indianapolis Children's Museum. I love seeing it when we are down there and able to tell our son's of all the details involved. I still think of it when I am in the area of the find when we are in town to see family that live within a few miles of this original find.
