Monaco Coach in Wakarusa

The small town of Wakarusa, population 1,600, is bracing for a big ripple effect when Monaco Coach closes its plant there and 1,000 workers lose their jobs. (WSBT photo)

WAKARUSA — One of Elkhart County's largest employers is cutting more than a thousand jobs. Monaco Coach is permanently closing plants in Elkhart, Wakarusa and Nappanee. This enormous layoff will have the biggest impact on the small town of Wakarusa.

The Wakarusa plant had the most employees with over 1,000 workers in that location. The entire town’s population is only a little over 1,600.

It’s not only going to hurt hundreds of families, but it's going to hurt the town as well — everything from local businesses to property taxes.

Wakarusa Town Manager Tom Roeder told WSBT News a lot of the town budget came from Monaco. In fact, he says they paid about $200,000 in property taxes. Without that money, the town may have to cut services and employees as well.

"I never had a phone call quite like that before,” Roeder said.

He says when an employee with Monaco Coach called him to say they were closing for good his stomach sank.

"It's a tragedy for the town of Wakarusa; not only the employees and their families but the local businesses,” he added.

A hairstylist with "The Clip and Curl" downtown Wakarusa says everyone is stunned by the news.

“I just feel sorry for these young people that have families to support,” she said. “I mean I knew things were down but I didn't think they would close the doors."

In the 28 years Stanley Cook has been cooking up business, he says he's not been served such a blow that affects the entire town.

"We'll feel it mostly at the noon hours because we do a lot of business with Monaco,” he said. “I feel bad for the employees that have had the bad news.”

Cook says he's expecting to take at least a 10 percent cut in business.

Many say they are worried with this already small town which could get even fewer people downtown and fewer dollars as well.

Why don't all you who are complaining start your own company if you know so much about how the other people are such bad managers? My, My, how did they furnish you with a paycheck for so long if they are so stupid?

Yeah I still work at monaco and will probable be there till the doors close. It sucks but I have a family. I need the Insurance. I am not related to anybody at monaco. If I find a job that I can make a competive wage I will leave. Some of us left don't have the training to change jobs. Family is the most important thing! I could just go on welfare to take care of my family, but that is not the way I am. The people who are no longer there were laid off or quit because they have family in manegment

Actually I don't work there anymore and glad. They laid me off in January after I had 2 shoulder surgeries and could not weld the sidewalls anymore. That's the way Monaco was, use you up and get rid of you. And no, if I was what you suggest I am then I am sure I would still have a job until the last day the doors closed.

Big name jobs in Wakarusa, huh? The employees were making $36,000 a year minuimum. I don't know of anywhere 1400 people are going to find that kind of pay in our area job market. NO jobs in South Bend area, no factories hiring in Elkhart County, and tons of people in Indiana losing jobs; looks like the beginning of the next depression to me.

why does the town manager think that they will lose the $200K in property taxes..just because they close the plant doesn't mean they can stop paying property taxes...they still own the property..sounds like they need a new town manager too!

With the job losses and its knock on effect, this is a tragedy for a lot of people. If there is no way of saving your jobs, all you can do is take it on the chin, keep your head held high and look for the next opportunity. Good luck.

Tragedy? How come? Because the news wants to hype all this up. There are many other big name places to work in Wakarusa! Why is this the governor's fault? Democrats and Republicans? CONGRESS and the stock market sets the gas prices! Mary's got it right, stats don't create a tragedy. What an overkill of news.

Continued....It's always been a numbers game with management. Have to make sure they get their huge quarterly bonus ya know. I just hope the employees that I told to dump their stock 6 months ago did so because I know A LOT that have their life wrapped up into that place.

Not to mention the medical facility that Monaco built in Oregon. I guess Irv Yoder was saying not to worry, Monaco was not going anywhere they were going to build a medical facility in Wakarusa too. What a great story to keep the people from looking for another job hu? Monaco has always been about keeping the employees in the dark about everything so their plans would not get screwed up. Upper management would always start rumors in their favor to keep things going smooth.

LOL!!We all knew then that the ship was about to take water! That was when sales were good!Poor buisness ethics, leadership,as well as pay!Better hope the farm pays well for those left over! Anyone that works or worked at Monaco knew this 6 months ago. The only people that are left as of right now are friends or family of supervisors and group leaders.
