One of the area's largest RV companies is cutting hundreds of jobs and closing three Elkhart County plants. Monaco Coach announced it is permanently stopping operations at its plants in Wakarusa, Elkhart and Nappanee.

Most production of motorized units now made in those factories will move to Oregon, where the company is based, but work on two models will move to nearby Warsaw. Monaco also will consolidate its production of trailers in Warsaw.

Monaco officials cited rising fuel prices, declining consumer confidence and tight credit for the fourth straight year of declining sales.

“With sales down significantly, we cannot continue to be a strong and viable company unless we reduce out production capacity and build fewer units," explained CEO & Chairman Kay L. Toolson in a letter to employees. "This was a difficult decision, and one that we delayed as long as possible."

Approximately 1,400 people — about a third of the workforce — are expected to be impacted. The shutdown will leave Monaco with about 700 Indiana workers in Warsaw, Milford and Goshen.

"While this is certainly a major event, Monaco Coach Corporation remains a strong company," Toolson said. "However, in order to maintain our company’s health into the future, we must take bold action now."

At this point, the shutdown is scheduled for September 17.

The company produces a range of motor-homes and travel trailers under the Monaco, Holiday Rambler, Safari, Beaver,McKenzie, R-Vision and Dodge brands.

This round of layoffs in the RV industry began in January:

January 2008 — Monaco Coach in Wakarusa lays off 200; 15 percent of the company’s total workforce. Monaco Coach slashes jobs in Wakarusa

January 2008 — Newmar RV in Nappanee lays off 20 percent of its workforce. More RV workers laid off in Elkhart County

January 2008 — Coachmen RV announces it will sell its Elkhart plant and move its headquarters in Middlebury; plans consolidation of some of the Middlebury plants.

April 2008 — More layoffs at Monaco Coach: An additional 600 workers at plants in Indiana and Oregon, about 300 in each state; 12 percent of its workforce. Monaco Coach lays off 600 in Indiana and Oregon

June 2008 — Terra Group announces cuts at five plants, including three in Elkhart County. Company employs 200 but doesn't say how many jobs will be eliminated.

July 2008 — Dutchmen Manufacturing in Goshen announces it will lay off 116 people and close two facilities in August. Dutchmen Manufacturing to lay off 116

July 2008 — Newmar RV in Nappanee lays off more than 150 workers.

this happens to any city or town that bases itself on an industry. If you could not see this coming years ago shame on you. Why did you not take advantage of the continuing education program some have? why did you not go out and look for something else? I used to work in that industry I feel your pain but now get off your duffs and think outside the box. Start your own business and try it from the other side. This is what this area needed to spark some new industry in the area...

And don't forget to mention that the US Dollar is almost worthless within the global economy, which is also to blame for the rising gas prices! Because this country is so far in debt, they print more money and circulate it!! More US dollars in circulation lessens it's value!! The dollar is almost worthless! We're in so much debt we can't see a way out!! Don't be surprised if we dump the dollar and change to the Amero.

There are many factors that have made up these "difficult" times. Yeah, it's not as "easy" as we're used to. But we're very spoiled. Yes we lost our jobs. So we get in our cars, trucks, and SUV's, go to our climate controlled houses, see what's on the TV or what's in the fridge, drink fresh water from our kitchen, collect hundreds of dollars worth of unemployment, and we find new jobs with the assistance of Monaco, WorkOne, friends, etc. Our terrible gov't is even arranging training $$ for us

Page 3 Paul Harvey That's 25% of the world's oil demand. Used by just 4% of the world's population. Can't we just produce more oil? World oil production peaked in 2005. Despite growing demand and an unprecedented increase in prices, oil production has fallen over the last three years. Oil is getting more expensive to produce, harder to find and there just isn't enough of it to keep up with demand. The simple truth is that cheap and easy oil is gone.

Continued from last post.. At current oil prices, we will send $700 billion dollars out of the country this year alone — that's four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. Projected over the next 10 years the cost will be $10 trillion — it will be the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind. America uses a lot of oil. Every day 85 million barrels of oil are produced around the world. And 21 million of those are used here in the United States.

This is because of gas prices. The gas prices have to do with the United States foriegn policy and the state of the economy. The head of this country is responsible for those policies and conditions of the US economy. So, therefore, Pres. Bush is responisible for this mess. Its a shame too many folks were too complacent and blind to it all. Open your eyes, It has alot to do with Bush. He is in charge here, look at the job he has done. His admin. let this happen to our country. Accept it people!

Also the when they moved the gravy production line to Oregon a few years ago because that was always Tolsons baby I kinda figured it would get worse. Anyone that worked on that line got whatever they wanted. The paint repair people would actually work about 3 hours a day and the other 5 hours they just sat around played a guitar and eat food they had in a slow cooker. They always worked overtime and grossed about $60,000 a year along with most of the people in plant 2 in Wakarusa.

Thursday, Jul 17 at 6:15 PM T Gaskill wrote ...

From what I understand the bank told Monaco to stop building stock units a few months ago and thats all they were building. About the crime going up your right, a lot of employees used to steal from that company all the time and some of that was from supervisors I hear. Not to mention I'm sure many employees will have to steal to support just their drug habits. Most people that worked for the company would never report if they got hurt because they would have to take a drug test.

It's easy to blame some one else. Yes, GWB has not done a great job but neither did Clinton. Politicians are about as equally worhthless as Union. They are both killing America. There are plenty of jobs out there, you just have to be willing to work and not sit on your can and read a newspaper and get paid for it.

Hey BB, it is complete moron, idiots like you that really hurt this country. Do not vote, please. You have no clue. Bush has been in office 8 years, a Republican Congress for 6 years. 60 percent of corporations don't end up paying taxes. The higher income people that buy these RV had their taxes CUT. Those are facts. Deal with them. Get a clue and then let's talk.

At our station we price our gas for what we paid for it and cannot adjust the price til we get into the next load but not all stations do that some adjust price to replacement cost even if they do not get gas in they change the price to what it would cost if they bought it that day

My son was one of the first laid off. They laid off the higher seniority hourly workers. The years they dedicated to this company, making them very profitable, but when times get tough, they are the first that they lay off. He didn't even get his vacation pay. I feel sorry for the rest of the employees that are losing their jobs, but for the company, NO !!!!!! Why don't some of the salaried, high dollar employees take a cut in wages?

Kathy, what is Mr. Souder supposed to do? What is the government's responsibility in this situation? People have to quit looking to our elected officials for solutions to every problem we encounter. They don't have them, and they never will - Republican or Democrat. Read the Constitution sometime, and try to understand what the role of government is supposed to be. I don't believe you will find in there that they are to make sure everyone has a job.
