An Alabama man suspected in the July 6 attack and attempted abduction of a Terre Haute, Ind., woman was arrested Thursday night in Phenix City, Ala., by Indiana State Police detectives.
John Harpold, 28, could face charges for kidnapping and criminal confinement, according to a news release.
Indiana State Police had received a tip July 9 from the Elkhart City Police Department that a person and vehicle matching the description were spotted in Elkhart. It is not known whether the suspect was in Elkhart at that time.
On Tuesday, an ISP detective learned of an anonymous tip made to Vigo County Central Dispatch. The caller said the person responsible for the attack lived in Alabama and was in Terre Haute visiting family. The caller also told dispatchers the suspect had received treatment for his injuries in Illinois, near Vincennes, Ind. Information also was given about the man allegedly buying a stun gun from a pawn shop in Alabama or Georgia.
Indiana State Police detectives began researching the suspect’s personal information and found that he did obtain medical treatment for cuts July 6 from the Lawrence County (Ill.) Memorial Hospital, according to the news release.
Detectives were then able to secure Vigo County warrants for fingerprints, photographs of injuries and DNA-related samples from Harpold, as well as a search warrant for the vehicle.
The attack occurred in the parking lot of the Garden Quarter Apartments as the 22-year-old female entered her vehicle. The suspect attacked the female with a stun gun, began choking her and forced her to drive from the apartments. The victim was then able to retrieve a knife and stab the suspect multiple times. She then stopped the vehicle, and the suspect fled the scene.
