Realtor fights off attacker in Ironwood Drive house

By Beth Boehne

SOUTH BEND — It has all the potential for a dangerous situation, yet it happens every day in neighborhoods everywhere.

A female Realtor, alone and unarmed, agrees to meet a strange man in a vacant house.

On Saturday, the potential was realized at a home on South Ironwood Drive.

The Realtor, who is not being identified to protect her privacy as the victim in the crime, told The Tribune she has thought about the possibility of being attacked or robbed while doing her job, and Realtors are even trained to prevent it. But in this case, she thought she was safe.

The man had called her office the day before and left a name and call-back number. She had called that number and first spoke to a woman, who then handed the phone to the man, and they set up the appointment.

About 1:15 p.m. Friday, she arrived to find him waiting outside, and they proceeded inside, where she showed him around.

He had been asking routine questions, about the furnace, roof and appliances for example, and he was neatly dressed and spoke articulately.

But in the basement, about 15 minutes into the showing, he asked her to go to a rear section of the basement. She said she felt uneasy and made it clear with her body movements that she wasn’t going to go, she said.

He then said he wanted her money. She told him it was in her car. He ordered her to remove her clothes and said he was going to tie her up.

“He got hold of my wrist,” she said. “I got away. I tripped over a dehumidifier. He got hold of me again and then pulled out a knife.”

She said she grabbed the blade with her hand and bent it, and it left a “little mark” on her palm.

She freed her other wrist and started kicking at him wildly. He then got up off the floor, ran up the basement steps and out the door. She called 911 on her cell phone and stayed in the basement for a while, so she doesn’t know whether he walked or drove away, she said.

She described him as being black, in his 50s, standing 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-7 inches tall and of medium build. He was wearing a blue T-shirt with the words, “Niles Brandywine” on the front.

The Realtor said from now on, she will require prospective buyers to meet her at her office first. But that would not necessarily have prevented this attack, she noted.

“I’ll tell you, I had to really work to get away,” she said. “I was real lucky.”

South Bend police Lt. Don Miller said he worries that with the housing market in such poor shape, Realtors might not take enough precautions to ensure their safety.

“If there is a guard, maybe that guard is going to be down even a little bit more because they want that sale,” Miller said. “My advice for Realtors is if you could be accompanied by another agent for a while until this thing is solved, it would be a good idea.”

Miller said he knew of no other similar crimes recently. He asked anyone with information that might help police to call Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.

I saw this report on the morning news broadcast today. It's frightening. I gotta say, tho, the thing I want to comment on is the way realtor was pronounced throughout the broadcast. It was pronounced real-a-tor instead of real-tor. It's a common mistake, but is like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

Self defense classes. A good one will teach you the techniques to get away (not fight) from an assailant. Some also teach you how to disarm as well.

I also don't really know how you can train for something like this.

I happen to be a Realtor myself. Everybody seems to be an expert here. It is a good idea to double up...unfortunately we are so busy there is no possible way to team up all the time. But it's a good idea. I was always led to believe that photocopying and id is illegal (for obvious reasons), although people do it all the time. I don't recall any training to stop this...I've been a Realtor for several years. We have also occasionlly had problems with theft at open houses. Get this dirtbag!!

how manty dead realators does it take for them not to show an empty house to a man and go down into the basement with him?

I used to be a realtor and was warned that you never go to a house that is empty if you believe that you will be meeting a potential client that is alone! Very lucky indeed always tell someone where you are going and who you intend to meet. Make sure that the person checks out and if possible get a copy of their drivers liscense, if they are on the up and up they won't mind. See if they can meet you at the office first. Make sure if possible that the clients were pre-qualifed for the house!!

well the realitor has this guys name (if its his real name) and a phone number because she had already spoken to him on the phone. Hopefully that will lead to a capture of this creep. Then he needs to be thrown in a basement and attacked...see how he likes it.

I'm a real estate professional and I have heard of this happening in this area before. Make sure you look for a vehicle why u arrive to an appointment and have a correct contact number for you client. Also a handgun is a great idea I carry on on all showing for the safety of myself and my client.

She was so very lucky to get away from the thug. Everyone should be on the lookout anymore, not just realtors. I personally don't trust anyone and isn't that a sad thing!!? I'm sure they will catch the pig, but will our justice system say, bad boy, don't do it again, letting him go? I'm so sick of our system right now. Lets go back to the days when someone gets caught, they go to jail with NOTHING but 3 meals a day. NO MORE RIGHTS!!! they give up their rights when they commit a crime!!!!

Learn about weapons and how to use them. Carry a firearm. Don't let a guy like this "run away" as he might kill someone else. Shoot him dead. Act like your ancestors and show some guts.

how scary. it seems like 2 agents could buddy up and go together to their appointments. it would sure be better than what could have happened. after the judges release this perp with a slap on the wrist if he is caught, this will be a problem again, too.seems like working together makes sense for the agents.
