Murphy and Nettavong were arrested Saturday morning in South Bend (photos courtesy St. Joseph County Jail) A South Bend couple was arrested early Saturday after an Indiana State Trooper found marijuana in their vehicle — a discovery that led investigators to their three children, left unattended in a south-side motel room. The pair were passengers in a car stopped for a traffic violation about 1:10 a.m. at the intersection of Fox Street and Twyckenham Drive on the city's southeast side, ISP said in a release. While stopped, a K-9 narcotics detection dog indicated the presence of drugs and police found the marijuana. Officers arrested 24-year-old Lionel Murphy and 23-year-old Kathy Nettavong, discovering in the process that their three children were left alone at a motel in the 3400 block of South Michigan. The children — ages 4, 2, and 18 months — were found unharmed and turned over to child protective services. Murphy and Nettavong were taken to St. Joseph County Jail, where they face charges of marijuana possession as well as neglect of a dependent. The driver of the car was issued a traffic citation and released. Most Popular
