Save money on the things you can’t live without

MISHAWAKA — Coffee, cigarettes, haircuts and bottled water. Many people consider them necessities. But if you can't live without them, there are ways you can save.

Bridget Dix is one of many people skipping the salon for Vogue Beauty College in Mishawaka.

“I just decided to try it out because manicures can be expensive,” she told WSBT News.

“Actually I just recently got laid off my job of 20 years,” said Kristina Gold.

Gold is also looking to save, and students vs. salon is big savings.

“All haircuts are $5, hairstyles are $5,” said Bonnie Swiatkowski, director of education at Vogue Beauty College. “[That’s] probably 50 percent of what the salon is.”

You can also save big by skipping bottled water. We caught Carolyn Wallace buying eight cases.

It’s not bad at $3.99, but let's say she just buys three a week — that adds up to more than $500 a year.

“We've already kind of downscaled a little on bottled water — we purify it with one of those pitchers that purifies water for when we’re just drinking at home,” Wallace explained.

People like Zac Liptak can't live without coffee. Let's say he gets a latte every day. At an average of $3, that comes to more than $1,000 a year.

“Usually I make my own,” he told WSBT News. “I have a can of Maxwell House at home that I put in my coffeemaker every morning.

Smokers could save thousands of dollars a year if they didn't buy cigarettes. But that's easier said then done — it's one of the hardest habits to break.
