Hint of hope on the horizon for Monaco Coach workersby Dustin Grove (grove@wsbt.com)
State officials are trying to help the 1,400 Monaco Coach workers who will be laid off in September. (WSBT photo) ELKHART — State officials met with executives at Monaco Coach on Monday to develop a plan to help the 1,400 employees who will soon be laid off. Monaco announced last week it will close down its plants in Wakarusa, Nappanee and Elkhart in the next 60 days. The state will soon be back at Monaco to help workers with resumes and to find a new job. The question is, where? “Some of these people, it’s the only place they've ever worked,” said Karen Hunt from Wakarusa. “It’s just hard.” Karen Hunt's husband is one of the 1,400 Monaco Coach workers who will be looking for work in two months. “He just wants to find work,” said Hunt. “I mean something with health benefits because we have three kids and we need health insurance.” Already this year, there have been 2,900 RV job layoffs in Indiana. Suppliers are concerned about the ripple effect and so are other businesses like the restaurant where Karen works. Monaco employees are their lunch crowd. “They're a big part of our business,” Hunt said. So while businesses brace for Monaco’s aftermath, everyone is wondering, just what do you do with 1,400 people laid off in a community? The state and the chamber of commerce said they're working on it. Elkhart County’s Chamber of Commerce said despite the gloom, there could be a glimmer of opportunity. “When a company is considering moving to an area one of the things they always look for is available workforce,” said Kyle Hannon from the Chamber of Commerce. “Well, through tragedy, basically we have 1,400 highly skilled people that are available. I think that will in some ways make our community more attractive.” Last week, Gov. Mitch Daniels hinted at just that. “We have dozens of live opportunities on the hook for the Indiana economy and I know of at least one big one in the Elkhart area I hope we can land,” he said. Hannon was questioned if he is aware of the governor’s plans. “Oh I hear stories but we'll see,” Hannon said. “I’ll leave that up to the governor to announce.” Those Monaco workers will join a growing number of unemployed people in Elkhart County. Last month, 7,000 people were out of work there, up from 6,000 the month before. Tuesday, Jul 22 at 9:22 PM Hello.. wrote ...Hint of hope from Mitch?? Please do not hold on to this hint too long. Think about the reality of Indiana in general and what is happening all around this state. This state needs a total overhall on all of the political positions in it. We are losing everything and the state keeps taking more.Until things change and we can only hope that something will soon, this is supposed to be the "Hoosier State" it has become the "Hoser State".I wish all of the employees luck . You must be one of the drug user drunks that will soon be let go from Monaco that remembers me. On to my real post now. Kay Toolson has been dumping his stock for years, a little at a time. I tried to explain this to many Monaco employees but they would not listen. Instead they thought I was an employee with a chip on his shoulder. I am very glad this point was brought up. Monaco should have named Forus Corp., named "For Us" by the executives. I was smoking weed and drinking booze so much during my years in this industry, that 1/2 of my check was going to weed dealers and the bottle. So you do have a point. But, you don't have to be an idiot about it. Tuesday, Jul 22 at 5:14 PM Steve-O wrote ...Linda, that applies to you too. You are a moron. I think "Some guy" has been looking for you on other sites. Why are you stressed out?. Do you work at Monaco?. Tuesday, Jul 22 at 5:08 PM Ignorant's sister wrote ...My brother is stupid- for the record, so take this as pure sarcasm... He is tired of hearing all this doom and gloom! He does not understand why people are so tight with their money and aren't buying his Port-a-Pit chicken that he makes at his part-time job. He says that he's not worried about his job as they have orders for the rest of the year. He's been told that orders can be canceled, but he doesn't believe it. His wife refuses to work- and they have 5 kids. Live off of child support! Erve and Kay and the rest of the management are truley incompitant. None of them have a clue. I would predict that the rest of Monoco will be out of business in the very near future. Anybody can run a company and make money when times are good but it takes real talent to run a company when things are bad. Monoco coach is completely void of any management talent. Now, tell us about Wall Street since Monaco is a publically traded company. Report the stock trends, executive compensation, etc. and maybe that will help explain why they're scaling way back on the worker bee level. Thanks. Add a commentMost Popular |
