SOUTH BEND — Police are investigating a double stabbing on South Bend's west side Tuesday night.

They were called to a unit at the Beacon Heights Apartments on Putnam Place, near the intersection of Ardmore Trail and Bendix Drive, around 9 p.m.

Investigators say a man entered an apartment and began fighting with a man inside. That's when the victim grabbed a knife.

"The suspect gained control of the knife and stabbed the victim once in the side of the head. The victim then got the knife back and stabbed the suspect twice; once in the arm once in the side," said Sgt. Chuck Stokes of the South Bend Police Dept.

Police say the victim suffered minor injuries. The suspect took himself to a local hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Well, I've lived out here for over 2 years... Out of the 15 families I know I out here, 11 of them are single mothers that all they do is work and take care of their children, 2 are single mothers that are in college and working, the other 2 of them are married families who both work, there is only one family that's married and doesn't work or go to school. None of these families have ever had any issues out here. So, no, it's not everyone out here is trying to cause an issue.

We can't make it a gated community-how will they reproduce. All the brothers and sisters have been used multiple times so they need fresh blood-from Gary or Chicago. Sad thing is that a couple of decades ago it really wasn't that bad a place to live. There were some trouble makers but that's everwhere. The shootings and stabbings have got to stop. Still think they need to build a prison that the residents need to farm etc in order to survive. No work - no food. Keep them in they're own community

Lets do a survey and see how many people there work....Lets do a survey and see how many people there are on food stamps, wick the list goes on. That place is trash. Maybe if they tore it down the peple there would have to live like every other human being, who doesnt ABUSE the Government and the programs. Take the survey MP I dare ya to.

as i read these blogs all i could think about is how could the city turn this place around, nobody talks about solutions only about how bad it is over there (not in my backyard) heres one ,why not make it a gated community.whereas only residents who have axcess belong there

You know, all you ignorant people sit your lazy butts behind your computers and complain insted of trying to do something to better your areas. Of course, this case actually had nothing to do with the location. It could have happened anywhere. It could have been your neighbor or even you. This just happened to be a case where basically the wife was cheating and tried to eliminate the husband.

Ok. If it's not legal to carry a hand gun in Indiana, then why would Indiana allow you to buy hand gun license from the police department? Of course, that is after a back ground check, finger printing, the works. So, check your facts! I've been there. I have the license.

I have lived in South Bend Indiana for 35 years. We moved to Beacon Heights Apartments its been a pretty good place to live but lately its been very unsafe for anyone to live out here, they need more security and cameras. And more safe places for the kids to play out here.

First, No, it's NOT legal to open carry in Indiana. Second, If your rent is based on income, guess where the rest of the money for your rent comes from?? Yes, welfare! Third, buy a scanner! Police arrest the same idiots everyday and the JUDGES let them right back out! VOTE FOR ELECTED JUDGES! Not appointed judges! Why do you think Lake Cty, and St. Joe Cty have the worst crime? Because they are the ONLY 2 COUNTIES IN THE STATE to have appointed judges!

Well, not that any of you really care... Many of my neighbors and I have lived here for many years. All of us work and do not receive any welfare. Yes, the apartments go off our income, but th income these days is very limited. Many of us have grew up here in South Bend, and we are disappointed, because, yes, it is true that a majority of the people we've met out here are from Chicago and think they can live off the government. So,unfortunitally, we have try to just keep to ourselfs.

If South Bend Police would spend less time harassing LEGAL GUN CARRIERS that prefer to wear it in plain site (which is legal in Indiana Folks!) we would have less crime in the cite. But lets be honest, South Bend Police had to be sued in court to get them to quit breaking the law by registering guns.

Truth: That works. Let them know that if they so much as make too much noise, they will be evicted. The threat of eviction has a magical way of making people behave. Ohhhhh, but someone will make a name for himself call it racist.

TRUTH IS RIGHT THE REASON THE CRIME RATE HAS INCREASED IS BECAUSE OF PEOPLE ARE MOVING FROM GARY AND CHICAGO BECAUSE THEY THINK IT IS EASIER TO GET AWAY WITH THEIR CRIMES. SOUTH BEND IS TURNING INTO GARY PART-2, THE JUDGES NEED TO GET SERIOUS AND STOP HANDING OUT PROBATION FOR HABAITUAL OFFENDERS.I LIVED HERE ALL MY LIFE AND I CAN'T BELIEVE ALL THE CRIME GOING ON, AND IT IS NOBODY FAULT BUT THE CRIMINAL, WHICH THEY ALWAYS TRY TO BLAME THEIR PROBLEMS ON OTHERS.

Wednesday, Jul 23 at 12:29 PM Truth wrote ...

Most of you blogers are right. The problem is coming from Chicago. For instances, Remember that kid that brought that gun to Washington High School? He was first at Adams High School and he came from Chicago. He was banned from Adams because he brought a GUN there first. But Adams didn't want it all over the News so the Principal and School Resource Officer covered it up and the kid was sent to Washington.

What the CITY needs to do it have a list of all the criminals in the city and have housing authority tell them that if anything happens well they live here then they will be banned from living in the city.

It's not correct to blame Chicago for the city's trash. It's a cycle that is not easy to break, especially when the people in the cycle know no other way of life. Get married/have children/grow old together/ that cycle works.

For the one that mentioned they "know the officers hours", did you notice that a police officer was actually working when that happened. It is not a complex problem, it is a family.... the victim, wife, and "boyfriend" have all been arrested for fighting. Try calling the police when problems occur rather than complain because they did not know about the problems next time. People need to stick together to make it safe, police do not have E.S.P....

It's called, the "Management" needs to stop thinking about the money and worrying more about our safety. Most of the residents out here know when they can get away with things because we know the officers hours. Those of us whom have been here for a few years are starting to worry about their own safety. We fear even letting our children out to play, because of these ignorant people.

Don't worry. The NW Side ( 1/4 of the city) has 5 uniform officers working protecting 30,000 people. When the mayor cuts the department there will be 4. Just Dial numbers: 911-Hall-OF-FAME and the staff will respond. Since the Mayor wants to cut fire & police, but not the CHOF.
