RV industry study in Elkhart County

ELKHART — In the wake of big layoffs in Elkhart County's RV industry, county officials are now looking into a study to see what the future holds for local production and jobs.

"Historically I think we have probably taken the RV industry for granted," said County Administrator Tom Byers.

Byers is hoping to help oversee a study into the local RV industry.

It would look at the effects of the economy on the RV industry, to policy changes in the county that could help the industry and to ways to improve fuel economy on motorized RVs.

The study was prompted by recent layoffs at several local RV plants and the planned Monaco job cuts in September.

"We just always assumed that in bad economic times, they always bounce back,” said Byers. “The question becomes now, if they don't bounce back, what do we do?”

The study would look at strategies and policies to assist RV plants.

"We’re concerned at this point that maybe with the new world economy, perhaps with a new world energy situation, this recreational vehicle downturn might be a little different than ones we've experienced in the past," said County Commissioner Mike Yoder.

One of those interested in the proposed study is Wakarusa Town Manager Tom Roeder. He said over 900 jobs will be lost at plants in his community.

“The RV industry is so important to our community,” said Roeder. “Something needs to be done, and now that local elected officials are pursuing this, I think it would be wonderful and hopefully that we can be a part of it."

"I think we need to find out just how long of a tail this economic downturn has for RVs,” said Yoder.

Elkhart County Commissioner Terry Rodino was in Washington D.C. on Wednesday to talk with the Department of Labor and Commerce. He hopes to obtain a $50,000 grant from them to start the study. Most likely it would be conducted with the help of an area university.

we are always looking for new members of our stores here. it may not be a large help to all the families there but if other dealers would look at this issue it might help a few families.there are a lot of very experianced people around there and in my case if they were interested in relocating to our state we would welcome the knowledge in this field . these are hard times for other markets but with the oil economy here we are still growing due to becoming more independent from overseas

To those who do not believe Corey, You can get a student loan WITHOUT a job, and can even take money out for the cost of living while you are attending school. Those who refused to educate themselves are showing their own ignorance.

My family is affected by this. He is working 2 jobs but will soon be down to 1 because of his company closing their doors and I have a full time job as well. We are not on welfare and are still struggling. If you are sick of hearing it then don't listen to it. We don't need anymore negative feedback from ignorant people.

this is what happens when a town/county puts all it's eggs in one basket...the industry slows down and everyone is out of a job....we need to be bringing in other sources of income to this area. there is no shortage of money in adult films.

My husband works at Atwood, a major supplier of RV components. He's lasted through the countless cutbacks so far, but who knows how much longer that will last. He's working hard at finding a new job, but (as we all know) the market is tough. He is educated with a degree, but an education is no guarantee when looking for a new job. I hope that the community makes it through these tough times and will thrive again soon! Best of luck to all!

I hope that you were able to detect the sarcasm in my post- I absolutely agree with YOU!!! My brother is an idiot and totally clueless and ignorant of the financial reprocussions of our economy. My mom has tried to paint the picture for him, I've tried to talk to him about his financial stupidity, but he still doesn't get it. They just recently dumped tons of money into fixing their pool, but I guarantee you that there's no food in the cupboards. It's about priorities and his aren't right.

Watch when they get done with the findings, there will be a big story about it like this--- After months of research, Elkhart officials determine that increasing gas prices and rising consumer cost has cause the RV into a downward spiral. Why dont they use the federal grant to increase the unemployment checks, instead of wasting it on this research that a 1st grader knows.

what kind of idiot "officials" need to study what happened to the RV industry? let's see, 4 dollar a gallon gas, the companies shoving shoddy RVs out their doors for YEARS whether dealers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY wanted them or NOT, and inflation as it is! wow! will I receive the "grant" money for answering first! I hope the government does not give these "leaders" anything but a boot. they need to go and get someone with a brain in office.

To the individual who states her brother is tired of hearing this. Not all family’s want to live on child support. Some of us work hard to make our own living!! Living week to week on child support is not what all of us can or want to do. Our family has been affected by the R.V. cuts. My husband is down to 4 days a week. Yes we are worried you are right money is money. However without it, people loose, their homes, vehicles and have no food. If there is no money you can not live!!

Corey, how ridiculous. If you're laid off, just get a loan for an education - right!

Why is everyone always so negative? Simple plan, if you recently have been laid off, get an education! You don't have the money...get a loan! I did it and now I have my loan paid off and in a comfortable job.

I agree with Dan S. What a bunch of morons we have in office not to see this coming, they must have went to Mitch's school of finance.

Everyone needs to stop their worrying and complaining and start being ignorant and clueless! He doesn't understand all the "doom and gloom" you are talking about. Of course, he and his lovely wife have 5 kids and she refuses to work. They depend on child support checks to get them from week to week. So why should we be concerned and the city leaders be concerned- evidently we are all making a big deal over nothing! Gas prices, food prices, mortgages, medicines- it's just money....

Tell me I'm dreaming. Tell me Elkhart County officials aren't really going to do a study to find out what happened to a publically traded company. Seems all they need to do is study what Monaco files with the SEC. Come on---this is not a problem exclusive to the RV business and Elkhart County. Businesses of all kinds are toppling everywhere.

I can't believe the lah-de- dah ignorance of our county officials who didn't see this coming. Gas prices have been rising steadily for at least five years. "This downturn might be a little bit different"? You don't say! Thanks, Sherlock!

I think if it's that bad the company's need to let us,we the people who work in them let us know the truth of how long we may have our job's.You know i work at an rv company that would rather push you to quit than to lay you off so you can get unemployment. How crappy is that, and our goverment doesn't care about us they care about the economy, that's all i keep hearing. What about the people who work there but's off everyday and get lied too?Are we gonna have job's in a month?
