SOUTH BEND — A South Bend man got some good news late Wednesday night. The ashes of his grandfather were returned to his apartment at the Arbors at Belleville Park. Robbers broke into an apartment and stole them along with thousands of dollars worth of electronics and housewares.

The ashes were found outside Alan Badgett's door around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. His grandfather died nearly three years ago.

Earlier in the day, Badgett told WSBT for the last few years, the ashes sat in an urn next to a shadow box.

"I don't understand why anyone would take that,” Badgett said. “It has no monetary value. It's just valuable to me and my family."

Alan's grandfather raised him. He says he was a hard-working man who would help anyone.

"I remember times when we would take our family trips to Mississippi to see his family, people would be broken down on the side of the road and he would pull over and help them,” Badgett recalled.

And having his grandfather's ashes was a way to keep those memories alive, for Alan and the rest of his family.

His grandmother Stella Lee is in a nursing home. WSBT News went with Alan as he delivered the shocking news to her for the first time.

"I wasn't looking for him to tell me that somebody had taken his ashes,” Lee said. “That was the last thing I was thinking about."

The family says the ashes are all they had left of him. They prayed and pleaded that someone would come forward and return their most precious possession.

"Like I said, you don't have to bring him to us, just bring him somewhere where someone can come and get him,” Lee said. “Don't damage his ashes, please."

"He was just that … he was my grandfather,” Badgett said.

Badgett says he plans on moving out of his apartment because he doesn't feel safe there anymore. Police are still investigating the robbery.

The morons probably didn't know what they were stealing when they took the urn. They probably just thought it looked interesting and decided to take it too. After they found out what it was, they either felt guilty or creeped out by the whole thing and decided to return it. I'm glad they returned the ashes instead of disposing of them in a dumpster somewhere.

Whatever..even if the guy invited them, it's a crappy thing to do to the grandmother. Ever hear of politely declining? Thanks for the assumption as to my intelligence..you have a good day, now.

WSBT Thank you for posting the apartment complex in your update. I'm glad to hear they got it back, but still disappointed that this all happened in the first place.

Glad to hear they at least had enough conscience to bring the ashes back. WSBT, you score off the charts on the tacky meter...trailing along to the nursing home so you could watch him tell his grandmother??

WSBT, please get it right...this was not a Robbery, it was a Burglary. The suspects were Burglars, not Robbers.

A wonderful story. It was heart breaking to see the guy on TV talking about his grandpa. God knows who has done this and watches everything and everything good and bad is recorded in heaven.

Ok, here we go again...WSBT doesn't give a clue as to where this was...we don't need the guy's address but at least tell us which neighborhood it was in. You do this quite often.

d - Judgment Day is when people who make life Hell are separated from the rest. They'll pull their hair out, screaming that it's not fair, that they're the ones being screwed, that they're innocent, that it's all about them... but the rest of us will see that the Earth we lived on was Heaven all this time, but it was being ruined by people who make it Hell. There are quite a few who think that if they're sorry about it at the last moment, they're saved. You can't fool anyone on that day.

Stealing an urn is pretty low, and I feel for the family. I also would like to know where this robbery took place, should other apartment dwellers worry? If this was in my neighborhood I would sure like to know.

I hope they read this and at least have enough heart to return his grandfather's ashes!

How sinister can you be? I am pretty sure a higher being has a way to repay people like this.
