ELKHART — School leaders in Elkhart are considering changes to their dress code. Hundreds of parents are getting a survey in the mail to help decide the matter.

The Memorial High School marching band is tuning up for the start of another school year, and Elkhart school officials are looking at some fine tuning of their own — specifically, the dress code for high school and middle school students.

“Our rationale behind it is that our principals are currently spending quite a bit of time dealing with dress code violations, and the feeling is that if we have a more uniform dress code the students would look the same and the principals wouldn't be spending so much time dealing with these violations,” explained Jodie Shaw of the Elkhart School System.

Several parents believe some changes are needed.

"I think we should modify the dress code for the school and probably look into having uniforms,” said parent Debra Hines.

"A modification? Yes,” agreed parent Floyd Mehreg. “I've seen many girls that just don't dress appropriately for school."

“Boys should not be wearing droopy pants and the girls should have their shoulders and their mid-sections covered,” said parent Michelle Portillo.

The Memorial High School students WSBT spoke with have differing opinions on whether a modification of the dress code is necessary.

“I feel that the dress code right now is not very tough but it’s also tough enough to where there's not really that many problems,” said Taylor Jacks, a senior at Memorial.

“I think it’s OK for right now,” agreed Jasmey Sereal, also a senior.

If the majority of the parents surveyed want changes to the dress code, the school system will then ask people for input. Any changes would not take effect until the fall of 2009.

Why should people be exposed to girls leaning over a desk and their breasts falling out. Or boys wearing their pants down around their knees and you can't see anything but underwear and butt cracks. Or how about the short skirts that barely cover their private area. Is this how parents are raising their children? Or are they even parents? Boys look at those girls no wonder their grades are so low they can't hear the teacher because they are to involved looking at that girl's falling out.

That is a nice try Chrissy..but why should the schools have to waste time calling the parent when the parent wasn't doing their job before the kid walked out of the door in the first place? The reason they only polled 500 people is because it is a good sample size. Teens today have liberties that we never knew as kids. How can you say they are being put in a box? Parents need to step up and take responsibility of their kids instead of trying to be their friend. I am all for uniforms.

I am wondering why only 500 parents were given a voice, how about the other 5000 parents? My thought is, if they spent as much time worrying if someone's hoody is a little to thick, or has fur and applied that time to making sure the students could read and write, our schools wouldn't always be on the failing list. If the students breaks a dress code rule, then call the parents. I think way too much time is spent on this issue, distracts from the real education issue. Failing Schools!!

I for one am so tired of seeing butt-cracks, belly buttons, cleavage, underwear sticking out, etc. All schools should insist on the students wearing uniforms. This will cancel some of the gang attire, rich kids vs. poor kids, and other things among the students. Plus maybe some of the perverted teachers won't get their eyes so full as much as they do now.

I respectfully request that Haley and Willis visit the high schools, soon. Thongs seen 2" above the waistline isn't pretty or self-expression. If students want to express themselves through clothing, let them do it at home.

Those kids need to refocus all that wasted energy into something productive. Kids who over-focus on their clothing/hair/makeup are almost always insecure or unimaginative, and the most likely kids to be drawn into drugs/alcohol or other dangerous behavior for the same shallow reason of fitting in. Uniforms are a great idea. I wished I had them when I was in school-kids then would punch you if you wore a certain color on a certain day, so there was still no freedom of individuallity.

I say that the kids should wear military style uniforms - especially the guys. This would bring order and respect (old style early 20th century respect) back to the schools.

Sadly, haley has a point. Nowadays kids can't talk or think outside the box without getting in trouble. Draw a picture that upsets someone, get suspended. The only thing they have that makes any sense to them is popular culture. Let them think for themselves, let them express themselves, and make their own decisions and eventually they'll catch on to how retarded they look with their pants falling down.

I think uniforms are a good idea. When I was in school, you were looked down on if you didn't have all the expensive designer clothes. Uniforms do away with that problem as well as the problem of inappropriate attire.

dress them like the amish ! that way theres no butt cracks or ect showing

Give the teens uniforms and maybe they will spend more time focusing on school instead of what everyone is wearing and who looks cuter than who. Give me a break... its school not 'What Not to Wear'!

No one should have to worry about some trashy idiot stumbling out of his pants or flopping out of her shirt. But, trashy little fools would find a way to ruin uniforms anyway, so how would that help? How about just make anyone who violates dress code rules go through self-respect classes, since their parents so obviously don't care enough about them to teach it at home. Then, uniforms or not, the focus won't have to be on clothes so much. And, call CPS to investigate those "parents".

I love my daughter to wear green skirts and white blouse along with black shoes and blue socks. This girls need to be recognized as intelligent individuals and the boys too. They need to have all blue or grey pants and a suit type of dress. Love my children dress well and look cute.

I think that they should have school uniforms because a lot of the students dress inappropriate, and they could dress better. So they really should have school uniforms.

Friday, Jul 25 at 6:02 PM Haley wrote ...

Most students are limited enough in life and I personally don't think that they should be limited even more on what they are allowed to wear. For some students picking out what they are going to wear to school the next day is a big deal. Its almost as if your taking away their right to express themselves, and depending on the school having uniforms doesn't necessarily mean that there will be less dress code violations. I don't think its worth taking away their right to dress the way they want.
