BENTON HARBOR -- A key part a $500 million development project in Benton Harbor has cleared a major hurdle.

The National Park Service approved plans to convert a large section of Jean Klock Park into a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. It's part of the Harbor Shores development.

The Park Service had denied an early version of the plan.

Harbor Shores wants to lease 22 acres of the park for three golf course holes. In exchange, Harbor Shores would add 38 acres of land to the park and would pay for park updates and upkeep.

Harbor Shores officials tell us they still need approval for the project from the Army Corps of Engineers.

They say Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm will tour the site when she makes a stop in the area on Tuesday.
