MISHAWAKA — A 25-year-old Elkhart woman was arrested Saturday after police accused her of smoking pot with her kids in the car.

Sgt. Bill Redman, spokesman for the St. Joseph County Police Department, said police were dispatched on the report of a car that was driving erratically along McKinley Highway, west of Bittersweet Road, just before noon.

An officer stopped the car in the 13200 block of McKinley Highway, near the H1 Hummer plant, and approached the vehicle.

Redman said the officer smelled what he thought was marijuana smoke coming from the vehicle.

Inside the car was the woman’s 15-year-old cousin and the woman’s two children, both toddlers, Redman said. Both younger children were in child-restraint seats.

Police then searched the car and found a small bag of marijuana.

Redman said the woman, when questioned, admitted to smoking the drug while driving and with her children present.

Police arrested the woman, accusing her of possession of marijuana and child neglect. She was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, where she remained in custody Monday afternoon.

Redman said the woman’s children and her car were released to the care of a family relative.

Charges have not yet been filed in the case.
