Penn Harris Madison schools to deal with budget cuts

PENN TOWNSHIP — Another local school district is feeling the squeeze as it begins planning for next year's budget. Penn Harris Madison Schools will lose $187,000 in revenue next year because of Indiana's new property tax caps.

In 2010, that number jumps to $580,000. That's in addition to rising fuel and food costs, and a loss of interest payments due to increased borrowing.

School board members met Monday night to begin figuring out where cuts might be made. And while no concrete decisions have been made yet, administrators say staff cuts might be unavoidable.

"We will have to look at some areas and determine, we are still waiting to see what is our health insurance cost for next year. That should come in September. So, we have some unknown variables, and once those come in, we'll have to re-look at our budget and re-prioritize our needs," said Assistant Superintendent Denise Seger.
