Middlebury man prefers golf cart over gas guzzlerby Ed Ernstes (ernstes@wsbt.com)
Pete Fore of Middlebury wants to drive his golf cart around town instead of his pickup truck. The town council is researching the legal requirements. (WSBT photo) MIDDLEBURY — A lot of people are looking at alternative forms of transportation to save gas. A Middlebury man wants to take his ride from the fairway to the roadway. Neighbors say he has the right idea. Pete Fore usually drives his pickup, which gets 14 miles a gallon. Driving back and forth can get expensive. Especially for someone like him, living on a fixed income. He says driving a golf cart around town would save on his fuel bills. "As we look at the rising fuel costs and our effort to go green, I see a need to cut back and do some things that I can run back and forth downtown for a few pennies instead of a few dollars,” he said. He is not alone in pursuing the idea. “I do know several other people in town that have an interest in the same kind of transportation mode,” he added. He asked the town council if he can legally drive a golf cart on local streets. "And If I need to have rules, like maybe like headlights, taillights, turn signals, whatever that may be,” he said. The town council is researching the idea and has touched based with several Indiana communities that have laws on the books regarding the used of golf carts on public streets. "Safety is probably one of our biggest issues we're probably going to look at,” explained Town Manager Lowell Miller. “It's going to the council Monday night and they're going to review. They have the information on some of the state statutes which is fairly new. The whole idea of the golf cart concept is fairly new.” Many other cities WSBT spoke with don't have laws on the books for golf carts. But Culver does: You must have a valid driver's license and proof of golf cart insurance. Homeowners insurance doesn't count. You also have to register the vehicle identification number and pay a $25 annual fee. Most PopularMore Good StuffAdvertisement
