On a hot summer day, heating your home is the last thing on your mind. But this winter, you may shiver in your boots when you get your bill. One local agency is helping people deal with rising gas prices.

Real Services helped 10,000 families last year in five counties, including right here in St. Joseph County. But with the cost of food and gas on the rise, the need for help may be on the rise as well.

"Especially with the high cost of gas, which follows over into everything you do — food and etc.,” said Tonjohnique Copphe, who participates in the Real Services Energy Assistance Program (EAP). The program helps people pay their gas and electric bills.

They cover Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph counties.

They say there may be some relief.

"Families don't have to have a disconnect notice to get the assistance,” said Ingrid Simmons with Real Services. “For EAP families they just have to meet the income guidelines."

Copphe says thanks to Real Services, she can focus on her family.

“It helped me just by being able to stretch my finances a little further, to be able to take care of some things that I needed to do, and at the same time provide heating and cooling to my family,” Copphe explained.

NIPSCO says hurricane season can affect prices.

They say this year, it's too early to tell what natural gas prices will be, mainly because of supply and demand, but there are options.

"The budget program through NIPSCO is not a bad idea because the payments are spaced out evenly throughout the year,” said Simmons.

Later this month, applications will be sent out to those who already receive assistance. For new families the program starts October 6; but you can call Real Services now to set up an appointment or to get on their mailing list.

The so called budget plan is a disaster waiting to happen. I had it one year and my heat was never above 63, at the end of the year I was sent a 579.00 bill. I bought a word burner and put it in my lower level and now my furnace stays off and my house stays 80 degrees. Lainey, was you behind? If not there has to be a problem somewhere. Maybe even a gas leak.

The budget plan doesn't mean that you're paying any less on your bill - just that it's spread evenly throughout the year. With gas prices continually rising, people already struggling are not going to be helped much by the budget plan and others will soon join them! Poor gas companies and their billions of dollars in profits. When will our government step up and say "enough is enough?" It's appalling!

My NIPSCO bill was $347.00 this month. Looks like we'll be wearing our winter coats, hats and gloves indoors this winter. With all of the other issues with the economy, how many people are going to freeze this winter???? I really, truely, hate NIPSCO.

If you live in Indiana, especially northern Indiana, we all prepare for winter all summer long. But the warnings have been coming all summer long about "how high your gas bill will be." Now, we as consumers should be warning the utility customers, " How many people won't be able to pay the bill!" They raise it every year, and our wages stay the same. How long can we keep going?

Yo, Sad Sack, let's see somebody step it up and have the utility companies and the oil companies audited to see what they do with all that profit! We'll never see it in our current administration. Or live to.

Jeff, the devil (Bush Admin.) knows his time is short and is letting his business pals pull the mother of all rip-offs on we the consumers. I have so many questions they would fill a book. I called various politicians, queried them and was promised answers but so far nothing. One office worker said, "You don't ask any easy ones". Jeff, the Congress just raised the debt limit to 11 trillion. We owe communist China alone 4 trillion. We are in unbelievable peril. Contact the perps and givvem hell!

I just don'tunderstand why people don't use the budget they offer. So what if you pay the same amount all year long at least you aren't worried about not be able to pay a bill in the Winter. If you don't go crazy while you are the budget you can have some of the Summer money just stay in like a account to the good to start Winter heating bills with.. Be smart get on it!

Why do all the utlities jump on the band wagon to make more money off us at the same time!!? The consumer is getting killed. Taxes, gas, food, utilities. Do they all ned a piece of the pie at the same time?? Why is there not a watch dog group(government ha ha) to regulate how badly the consumer can or cannot get screwed over?? Times are bad and if they keep taking, pretty soon there won't be anything left to take from us!!

They do offer a BUDGET plan I have been doing it for 6 years and it's worth it. You pay the same thing month in and month out. No surprises at winter. Let's think smart and use the budget.

We got our NIPSCO gas bill today and it was an un precedented $60 for the month of July. I shudder to think what it will be in Jan.-Feb.with heating season. Where is relief for the rest of the strapped populace? Did we retirees save our money to be secure in retirement, only to be goughed by the Services and Commodities industries? Let's get some regulation back to protect all citizens. Let's demand government oversight and inspection, and direction, of providers of essential goods and services.

I want to know how to get help with my bills. Everymonth comes with such a high prices that we do not have money for food. I went to the food bank but also they are going so low and the lines of people waiting to have some food. I know the winter is gona be one of the coldest in years I heard, thats why I want to prepare myself now. Should I start paying now for the winter cold that is coming our way?
