DOWAGIAC — A Dowagiac man arrested after an assault at the Family Fare store became violent and began throwing furniture around the police station, authorities said.

The 29-year-old was arrested after the store clerks reported shoplifting at the Michigan 51 store about 4:25 p.m., Dowagiac Police said. When they confronted the suspect, whose name has not been released, he allegedly assaulted the clerks and fled from the store on foot.

Police found him hiding near the front of the Pamida store in the 56400 block of Pokagon Street, and he was taken to the station. While there, police said, the man became violent and began throwing furniture in the hallway and spitting at officers.

The man was restrained and taken to the Cass County Jail. He faces charges of retail fraud, assault and battery, and resisting and obstructing police.

There was no word on any injuries involving the clerks.
