SOUTH BEND — When it comes to money, many moms know how to stretch a buck. WSBT talked to those experts to find out how they save on kids clothes, toys and a whole lot more.

Joanna Ladson says with three kids and one income she has to be a serious saver.

"I do a big garden out in the country at my parents' place and I can all my food — the green beans, the pickles — and so that's what we eat on," she said. "When he was a baby I used to make my own baby food."

The Ladson family even finds ways to save when they eat out.

"I would even take a food grinder with me and just feed him off my plate and that saved a lot of money there because you didn't have to take the baby food with you," she explained. "When we go to Burger King, they have the chicken nuggets that are $1 for four of them and so I get the kids those nuggets and they share fries off of their dad or I, and then they get waters to drink ... so that saves a ton."

Food isn't the only way she cuts costs. Ladson cuts the whole family's hair, too.

Frugal moms tell us another great resource to save on clothes and toys is garage sales. There are also second-hand resale shops where they sell gently used clothes at half the price of what you pay at a retail store.

"Here we have an Abercrombie long-sleeve polo that's $8.50, which at the mall you'd pay easily $40 for," said Stephanie Schrimsher from Once Upon a Child in Mishawaka.

Once Upon a Child sells gently used clothes, cribs, toys and more. One mom says she does all her back to school shopping there.

"My kids are getting quality clothes at a good price," said frugal mom Lisa Cronkright.

The store will also pay you for your stuff.

"We are noticing now more people coming in trying to sell to us — obviously gas prices are a huge impact," Schrimsher said.

For serious savers like Ladson gently used items are a way of life.

We're told another great way to save when it comes to diapers and baby food is buying the generic brands.

Also check out the wonderful momadvice.com website, Amy Clark (who appears on WSBT mornings) is a snappy fountain of frugality and good advice. She's probably the next Martha Stuart/Rachel Ray.

Tip on milk, Buy vit. D whole milk( red cap) and when its half gone fill back up with cold water. It taste like 2 percent. My kids are picky eaters and they never complain. I dont do the resale clothing for my kids. I find clearance cloths at Kohls or JC Pennys for a few bucks ea. Dept. stores are cheaper for me than resale shops. Walmart is way high on clothing prices. Last year the most I paid for an article of clothing was 3.50. Share some other ideas on here.

Absolutely NONE of the money saving tips EVER help me- because I've always done it that way. It's a little discouraging for those who aren't frivolous to hear someone being praised for what we have always assumed was just common sense. Like a straight A student having to sit through an awards program for someone who finally broke a D, this being news makes me feel like a genius! Here's a tip: stop being driven by vanity and make decisions based on actual need instead of wasting life on "style".

people are just trying to share how to save, if you are already doing these things and have been forever then great! you don't have to be rude about it... since you have been doing it for so long maybe you have new ways of doing things to share!

I hope that your viewers/readers will check out my blog The Lean Green Family (formerly Suddenly Frugal) and find new ideas that they haven't tried.

To SW and Mom of 4, congrats on having learned and practiced cost cutting ways that are safe to use. Your comments imply an unawareness that for each provider who's aware of ways to save, there are many who aren't. Maybe you should be sharing some ideas in a cooperative that offers to help those who are living hand-to-mouth from day to day. It's a great way of giving back to the community.

yeah, do a segment on diapers. For two baby booties we only go to Sam's club. The membership pays for itself within two cases of the Sam's Club brand (member's mark) diapers. We use the member's mark for daytime and buy one case of Huggies for nighttime.

Duh this is something most american moms know and do. Even if you have 1 income or two, I have been doing things like this for years, guess I should have called the local news to tell them how to be wise! Give me a break
