ELKHART — Sen. Barack Obama campaigned in Elkhart Wednesday, accompanied by Sen. Evan Bayh. This was Obama's 42nd campaign stop in Indiana, and his second trip to Elkhart.

Bayh, who was once in the race for president, is now in the running to be Obama’s vice president.

Their joint campaign stop in Elkhart Wednesday fueled buzz across the country that the announcement would happen right here, the Democratic ticket would be filled on this Hoosier stage.

But it wasn't. And afterward, Obama wouldn't say when it will.

"I have said that I will not answer any questions about the vice president selection process until I actually introduce the vice president. So I'm not going to make any comments on that," he told the media in Elkhart. "I can say that Evan Bayh is a valued colleague and a good friend and I think can be critical in helping us win in Indiana by appearances like this today."

Critical in Indiana, where the presidential election hasn't been contested like this in more than 40 years.

CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley says Bayh could be the one.

"Midwest, moderate, big name in Indiana — which certainly will have some pull," she told WSBT News.

She says they've spent a lot of time together, too. But so have a list of others — including some more experienced.

"Look. There are a lot of people out there. I would not be surprised if it were Bayh. But I wouldn't be surprised if it were Tim Kaine in Virginia or Joe Biden in Delaware," Crowley said. "I think the people who know may be talking but they're not saying anything."

Until they do, everyone else will wait ... including Sen. Bayh himself.

Some experts say Obama won't announce his pick for vice president until next week at the earliest.

Julie is right. Biden is the only choice. If Obama doesn't pick Biden, don't vote for him, because he blew it.

Joe Biden is the only VP choice that has the background to bring strength to an Obama ticket. You can't bring about change without a man like Biden who has a track record of leading and working with both parties to get things done.

Who cares what he picks to run around with? He's still not American enough to run this country. If his picky selfish wife can't imagine a good thing about this country except her own personal moment in the spotlight and he won't apologize for her, or tolerate even the smallest gesture of patriotism, then he can go back to the marxist/socialist wallow he crawled out of and stay there! He hasn't one single real idea, just a lot of rhetoric which only seems to appeal to the shallow "gimme" class.

How much of a leader is Bayh if he was supporting Billary? We all hate her. We need somebody else.

Bayh... please. that would turn me off of Obama if I wasn't already turned off. Though, if it had been Hilary on the ticket and it would be a Clinton-Bayh... then i'd vote. McCain '08!
