SOUTH BEND — After a marathon negotiating session Wednesday night into late Thursday morning, the local teachers union and South Bend Community School Corp. have agreed to a contract.

Carolyn Peterson, president of National Education Association-South Bend, confirmed Thursday afternoon that the two sides have come to an agreement.

South Bend teachers have been working without a contract since Aug. 15, 2007.

“Psychologically, this is a big boost for the teachers to have it settled before school starts,” Peterson said.

Classes for the 2008-09 school year begin Tuesday.

The two-year deal is retroactive to the expiration of the previous contract.

Both sides must now ratify the agreement and have agreed not to release specifics until then.

Peterson said she hopes that it will be ratified by the NEA-South Bend membership yet this month.
