Thirty organizations, schools and businesses participated in a Worker Transition Workshop on Thursday, August 7, 2008 to help laid off workers go back to school or find new careers. (WSBT photo) ELKHART — Layoffs have pushed the number of people looking for work in Elkhart County to over 3,000 this year. Some of those people got help Thursday finding a new career. Congressmen Mark Souder and Joe Donnelly put on the Worker Transition Workshop. Thirty organizations, schools and businesses were on hand. The purpose of the workshops is to provide laid-off workers and those soon to be laid off with the resources to transition to another job. Tim Baucher has been out of work since April. “Every time you go to apply for a job, it seems like they’re unloading a busload there to apply for the one job that's available,” he told WSBT News. ”I think the economy has got the whole country in an uproar." The event at the Career Center was open to any displaced workers from around the area. But the majority of those WSBT talked to had been laid off from the RV industry. "I was laid off from Coachman about two weeks ago,” Tracy White of Goshen said. “I'm just hoping that by coming here, I can find the way to go back to school, or to learn some new skills." “I've been in the industry 15 years plus. We're laid off this week,” Elkhart’s Robert Morrison said. “I'm personally scared. I've been totally stressed out and I'm hoping that I can come out of this with some positive news." “I'm laid off from Coachman Industries,” said John Uryga of Dunlap. “I saw the workshop. I decided to come down hoping that I might make some contacts or possibilities for employment." "You always hope for the best,” Baucher said. Another workshop will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wakarusa Missionary Church on Waterford Street in Wakarusa. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
