INDIANAPOLIS — In a unanimous decision, the Indiana Court of Appeals Monday affirmed the 65-year murder sentence for Larry R. Mitchell, convicted in December of the shooting death of Ja-Vonda Tharbs in 2006.

Tharbs was shot while at her sister’s apartment on the night of her high school’s prom. She had apparently been mistaken for her sister in a crime of retaliation.

Mitchell had appealed his sentence, challenging the appropriateness of a maximum term.

In July, four other people were charged with felony crimes in connection with Tharbs’ murder. They are Jason Reeves, Terry N. Waddell, Jermaine Reeves and Clover Smith, who await trial.
